We need to migrate from the u.s. Non u.s. registrar, and some non usa tld like .tk,.cc or similar with Netherlands or Asian hosting. Ideas? It's only a matter of time before we get caught up in the decline of the u.s. and it's grab at internet control.
This is good initiative. I haven't got any experience with this particular thing, but all I can say is one popular p2p site migrated to .su (The Soviet Union old top-level domain), it's still in use. (Or rather, now it is in use contrary to when SU actually existed.)
I don't know how likely it is that the US will decline and bring the internet in the hole with it, however it is never a bad idea to prepare for the worst. How much space does this place take up anyway? Backups for live restoration should be a priority given how much time it takes to propagate 100%.
i think russian based host can be ok. On the russian facebook (contac.ru or vkontackte) they have free mp3 and video uploading of copyrighted material even
Changing country won't really help whatever you're trying to do. ACTA (The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is coming, and it's just as bad - except this one is WTO-supported so it affects more countries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement This means you can't have sites (or users for that matter) predominantly in Australia, United States & Canada, the European Union, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore and Switzerland Even if you didn't pick any of those countries, part of the reason for these new spates of copyright law is to block sites of countries who don't have copyright laws that mesh with the US, so even if you moved the site it'd probably still end up getting blocked in the US if copyright issues are occurring. If it's MegaUpload and their ilk that's given you the willies, remember their site was based in Hong Kong (under Chinese Law) and it still got shut down because it's owners did what you are prescribing to do - run it in another country to their own which *does* have copyright laws. I wouldn't stress too much over it: whilst we've had a few scares over the years you've been pretty vigilant when things have crossed the line, which must put you down in developers' good books. However, I accept that you know (and seen) a lot more than me, you have your reasons and it's your site for you to do whatever you want with. Personally, though, I'd avoid making too rash a decision, especially if all it brings is raising peoples' suspicions by hosting in a lawless country when overall this site is mostly talk and no trousers.
Not quite... MegaUpload had servers in the USA. Also .com is a USA based TLD and therefore the people who control the domain name are under USA law, therefore they could just redirect/seize the domain.
I second .RU a lot of Russian sites have copyrighted material and nothing happens to them apart from being blocked in countries.. Not too sure how .AU is. This thread sorter complies with a URL I wanna buy but no idea how to do it. ANYWAY, .nr .cn are other choices.
Yes, you're correct. Ignore my idiocy on the matter. Still, if it's MegaUpload that's spawned this uncertainty in your mind, remember the FBI took interest in Dotcom and co primarily for counts of racketeering and money laundering as well as copyright infringement, and many of the companies running to the hills have the same remits and scheme to MegaUpload. Unless you have a dark secret about this site you're not telling us, you should be fine (although, it *would* explain your fear of appearing on camera ).
Using a namecoin may be a good idea as well. Asseblergames.bit Not as the only URL of course but would be cool. http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page
in .RU or .SU you wont have any troubles for at least next 15 years) Sometimes I think that internet in Russia is something really different than internet in another parts of the world. We still have web pages with free mp3 downloads and you can watch any movie online for free. I really think that there is no better way to watch movies/listen music than vkontakte.ru - you can use vk.com (I guess it's the same but on english).
Russian Internet = wild wild west. I was using the Internet back when warez sites were easy to remember and somewhat reliable. What history taught me is that everything moves underground, at least the good/nasty stuff.
