Though I think this thread will just be me and Gaijin Punch Shooting the shit about Shmups we talked about in my Treasure and Dreamcast threads. As established I'm a Cave fan. Also love the Taito stuff like the Ray Series and Darius Twin onward. Parodius is a fave, Zero Gunner 2, Raiden 3 OH and I can't forget Shikigami No Shiro..... I could go on. I'm actually pretty new to the Genre My first was Ikaruga in 2002. MAME opened my eyes to so many awesome games and now that I have a PS2............
There's a whole forum dedicated to it if you really want to see fans take their love of the genre to the next level. I'd say the majority of them are Cave fans (who can't like a company that still puts out quality "old" games) but there are quite a few that hate them and will stick w/ their old shit. Capcom isn't really a shooting game company...they only made a few, and they were pretty medicore. Raizing, was good but the rank systems get way out of hand if you ask me. I like Toaplan, but hate the check point systems incorporated in their games.
yeah, old and nuuskool shooting is difficult to compare if not nearly impossible. i like them both, but the only thing i'm really missing in the new age of shooting are the good old handdrawed sprites and BGs. i'm a very visual orientated person, but less in technical issues more than how a 2D game is designed overall. therefore probably my most fav. cave title would be donpachi, since there are some really nice and awesome handdrawed sprites, BGs, explosions etc. in there. the gameplay wasn't that complex at that time, so it's kind of a bastard between the old and the new style shooter (turn).
I like dedicated shoot 'em up companies, they made some great Mahjong games. I'm pretty much an old school shoot 'em up fan, a lot of the newer games seem to use 3D to do 2D games and I dislike it as it doesn't look as artistically good as the older games. However Cave do make some nice 2D shooters. Current favourites at the moment are Raiden (Playstation), Sonic Wings (Arcade and Playstation 2), Ibara (Playstation 2) and Thunderforce IV (Megadrive).
Didn't I say somewhere I like 8ing's games? and Mars Matrix is the shit. Can't say I like R-Type Final there's something off about it like it's not R Type is more like Boarder Down with out the awesome Taitoesque music. How can we not mention the Strikers 194x series? Those games are fucking awesome. I post on the shmups forums or used to......I forgot my names on there and can't log in.
I'm currently enjoying Sokyugurentai (SAT) on a daily basis and plan on getting more into Saturn shooters overall. I have been a fan of abstract shooters (rRootage or Noiz2sa) for some time but those are more fun for their hypnotic combination of shooting + music than for the shooting itself. Every Extend Extra on the PSP is also a favorite even though it's not exactly a shooter game. Kaiten Daisenso/In the Hunt is also one I played for the first time on Saturn recently and got to like a lot for it's presentation (can't say much about gameplay yet). A 2D feast that should really have been on the Neo Geo. It's Metal Slug's forgotten (step)brother, isn't it?
I'm a shooting fan as well. My 1st one was in 2004 Ikaruga... I played it to death for almost 2 years, successfully I got deeper and deeper into that genre untill now that I'm truly addicted to them. My favs are CAVE and Treasure where there lots of single games that I love. i.e. DDP, DOJ, Ikaruga, RSG, Mars Matrix, Ketsui, Espgaluda, Soukyuugurentai, Batsugun, Gradius series, Parodius series, some PCE shooters and so on and so on... I wasted lots of time on Ikaruga, Mars Matrix, DDP DOJ, Espgaluda, Gradius (every version except pc88 and x68k), Batsugun, Soukyuugurentai, Ketsui, DDP, Hellfire, Yalkina STG and some others I cant remember at the moment But: shuutingu rabu is always there^^
How many of those did you clear, Ave? Ketsui took me forever, and that was only 1 loop, and I bombed the last boss to death like a coward.
Well I have a slightly longer 1CC list but out of the mentioned ones, I cleared: Ikaruga (easy, normal and easy+normal on prototype mode), Espgaluda, Gradius (NES 3-2, PCE 2-3 and Arcade on Saturn 2-2), Batsugun (special ver stage 8... not really cleared obviously), Ketsui (1-ALL), DDP (2-2). Ketsui took me 15 days starting from my first time playing it. but I didnt play it in Tokyo because I think 100yen per credit is too much for just practice (I havent gone to shibuya back then) so I just played it in Kyoto for 1 week and lets say I wasted about 5 credits on it every day for a week and then cleared it when I was back in Tokyo. It took me about 1000yen in the HEY before the 1CC though. ps: I used a shitload of bombs as well at the last boss, about 4 or 5.
*raises hand* Though I hate Psikyo far more. Oh my God I hate them so much. OH: At any rate, I love Tecno Soft (sans TFV which I thought was a massive step back), Raizing, Radiant Silvergun (not so fond of Treasure's other shooters), Jaleco (for Game Tengoku alone), and... probably some other people I'm not remembering because I haven't done much shmupping lately.
Ave: That's pretty mad. Way better than I did. I tried Ketsui right after ESPGaluda (I hadn't even cleared ESPGaluda yet) so I was still pretty much a rank amateur at the time. I broke it out now and again but always conceded defeat on stage 5. I finally got the clear this last time I broke it out just before my son was born. After playing Mushi Futari on Maniac for months (and finally clearing it) I played original and got to the last boss on my 1st credit. 2nd credit I got there w/ 3 remains and 3 bombs and still died somehow. :/ I suck at the Konami shooters.
