So a month ago I bought an used Japanese Saturn (Model 2/VA5), my very first Saturn. Just few days ago I received Grandia which I bought used from someone else. When I started up the game I noticed this weird lines on the top right corner of the screen.

It shows up on the FMV before the title screen.

I did some troubleshooting and eliminated AV cable, retail discs (perfectly fine on SSF), and modchip being at fault. My TV does not have any sort of analog input so I'm using XRGB-Mini instead. I don't believe the Mini is at fault here, since it handles other 480i source (PS1/PS2) just fine. I don't have any other Saturn games that runs at 480i to determine if it is just a problem with Grandia. I don't see this weird line on my other Saturn games, though they all run at 240p.

Can anyone help me troubleshooting it?

Bumping this thread, now that it has been moved.

Does anyone know of Saturn games that uses 480i fullscreen FMV beside Grandia?

In the mean time I'm waiting for replacement FFC cable that I ordered, which I suspect was bent when I installed the modchip.

Okay, it is definitely not my TV or XRGB-Mini. I finally managed to test it on another TV without XRGB-Mini, and I can still see this weird line.

Right now I'm thinking about doing a re-cap on the mainboard. While I'm on it I might as well replace the PSU with picoPSU plus a buck converter for the 9V rail. I recapped the old PSU just the other day and I think TOP102YAI (PWM switch) didn't like it at all (it sometime will have this weird buzzing sound). Maybe it didn't like the low ESR caps I used. Either way I'm not going to bother replacing the PWM switch.

    Does anyone know:

    * Is there any low ESR caps on the mainboard (VA-5)? I see Sega uses couple different capacitors despite having the same value printed on the label.
    * Pin count and pitch of FFC connecting controllers/reset daughterboard to the mainboard?
    * Any other Saturn games that runs at 480i? (Still looking for answer on this)

Have you tried the game in an emulator? Just to see if it's something the developer expected overscan would hide.
