I just recently got a broken saturn for really cheap. To my surprise, it had a mod chip installed. Since my other Saturn isn't modded, I decided to install the chip on it.

After installing, I got it to run original discs and music CDs, but when I tried burned discs it would keep spinning and stopping the disc for a while, like in short pulses, and take me to the menu. After freezing for a moment, it detects the audio tracks.

Here are the pics of the mod chip in question:

I wonder if the problem is the mod chip itself, the laser, or the discs i'm burning.

    Thanks!

The Ribbon cable slots on the chip actually have 22 pins. The leftmost ones on the first picture are useless and the ones on the right are connected to the top of the board only so that it appears to have 20 pins if you count from its underside. I believe it's for a 21pin drive.

What intrigues me the most is that this chip has no effect on the saturn. It acts the same with and without the chip.

But what about that extra contact on the top? There are 21 there. Would the drive work with original discs and music discs if the chip was for a 20pin?

Thanks a lot! I've noticed the drive does have a white stripe on the edge. The one on the Saturn it was on doesn't (it's 21pin, almost broken in half, btw). My sega Saturn is a Model 2 TECTOY one, since I'm in Brazil. I guess that might be it, since the Saturn works exactly the same with and without the modchip installed, but if I install the mod chip without the power cable it doesn't recognise the drive.

Just got back to my Saturn, so, where should I soldar the signal wire?

Just to illustrate, this is how the ribbon cables go on the chip:

    Alright, done.

But now the laser just moves to the center and does nothing. The animated saturn logo doesn't appear also.

EDIT: Solved. The solder was just really bad. I did it again an the laser moves again. Gonna see what happens.

EDIT2: Got it to work once. Then it just stopped working, i think the laser just died... Nothing happens, not even without the modchip.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi, i am from Brazil and i have a modchip like this but not understand because i not speak english.
But i read and think is modchip is suitable for this 21pin in front and 20pin to back and is work on VA 2 to VA9 mainboard.
User Druid II say this work in other board but need jumper pin 1 direct in all flat ribbon? its right?
    Thank you very much everyone!

phantom.png Is this an odd saturn mod chip? I'm going to install it in a 32pin jvc saturn model 2.

I have the instructions to install it properly but just rate it.

No. You need a signal wire going to pin 1 (not a jumper) and to cut traces.

Use the search. It was made by users on this forum. It's probably about your only choice now.

Austin , you lifted the middle jumper, that's why it doesn't work. The middle jumper needs to be connected to the JVC pad, and there's no pad left in that pic. Did you use a damn industrial soldering gun????

You can add a wire to fix it, but it will be some fine soldering and if you already broke that jumper pad, I wouldn't hols much hope of not damaging the chip more when attempting the repair.

You could just use it in a 20 pin drive.
