Weird Price Fluctuations Ever since I got a disc rotted copy of Salamander collection for my Saturn I've cooled off on collecting for it. So today I checked my amazon wishlist. MOST prices have gone down. the Thunderforce collections went up about $20 but the biggest jump I saw was for Tryrush Deppy. I know it's a rare game but last I knew it was about a $70 game through amazon resellers. Now it's close to $300, there's a $200 copy on Ebay. On the otherside before the Retro Boom Tengen Tetris on the NES was in the hundreds now it's in the $50-60 range. Is there any rhyme nor reason to this? I never quite figured out how old games are priced out in the resell market. Is there some price guide somebody has someplace or what? (Just noticed the thread title typo...)
I know people hate hearing this over and over, but it's a simple supply and demand model. Either the supply of those games went down, or the demand for those games went up. (That causes price increases). The reverse can be true as well. Supply increase, or demand decrease would cause the prices to decrease. Now, why it happen to those particular games, idk. I do know I almost always see a demand increase when people find out about old games from media outlets (i.e famous gaming youtube channels, or gaming forums, or gaming newspages.) Heck, a perfect example of a demand increased game is "cubic ninja" for DS. It went from a terribly low demand, to one of the more demanded games in just 1 day after it was found that it could be used to exploit a 3DS. The price increase happened nearly immediately after.
I'd guess it's people trying to finish up there saturn collections. I saw some odd NES games go up in value even though they weren't good games or well known. But because people needed to finish there NES collections they were willing to pay a premium to get those games.
The reason i know about tryrush deppy was because of this particular YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwOv61e8kqA
I just think that ebay prices are what people want for their copy. It doesn't mean people will bite that price.
I'm going by both amazon and Ebay. Ebay was actually cheaper than Amazon. OH and if a mod/admin answers here, the typo in the header is driving me nuts, feel free to fix the typo.
I'm guessing the reason Tetris dropped in price is because it's not actually very rare. It may have been hard to find when most people didn't know what it was. As soon as it became well known that it was "very rare" thousands of people discovered they had it and flooded the market.
Just how things go for the Saturn. I remember when I was building my Saturn collection way back when I landed Taromaru (2nd hand, complete) for $80, Mizubaku Adventures for $70, Hyper Duel for $80, Blast Wind for $30, and Tryrush Deppy for $60. Now whenever I entertain the idea of rebuilding the Saturn collection I just go look at the prices and am like "Nope nope nope!" (granted, I kept Taromaru and Blast Wind, as they are two of my favorite games ever).
I think I got into the Saturn a bit late in the game. I do have MOST of the games I bought it for. But still it's intimidating. Want the odd shmup here or there? It's gonna cost me. obscure platformer? Gonna cost me. At least Salamander is semi reasonible if i decide to replace my disc rotted copy. OR I could get it for the PS1. It seems once a Saturn game's price goes up..........it never comes down either.
Bitch please, the New 3DS XL is costing R$3000 or U$1050 at here also, power bill is 70% more expensive, please help
that's your government's fault. I feel for all you Brazilian gamers but at least there's a reason for having to pay out the ass to game in that case. Then again, it's Brazil, Your ugly women are hotties in other parts of the world. I think it's a fair trade.
Early-mid 2000s was a beautiful time for Saturn collecting. If I could go back I probably wouldn't sell my collection (hell, given how much MORE I'd get for it now I definitely wouldn't).
I think then I was heavy into Dreamcast and classic XBOX. never thought to. Hopefully my fingers are crossed Saturn prices start going down like NES games are starting to now. Still have to replace Salamander, figure out a means to get Hyper Duel without taking out a loan, Round out the fighting games, mostly the Neo Geo ports and pick up some platformers. Most of these insane prices are from Japanese Sellers.
I'd wonder why Umihara Kawasi for the Super Famicom is so damn expensive? cuz i was planning on buying it but didn't think i would cost a ton for some game that i don't even think alot of people would know about.
At least with cart systems, you have the luxury of Flash carts if you just want to play something. I think even the PS1 there's some flash drive PSISO. Saturn.......gotta bend over backwards if you just want to play something.
So... out of curiosity, is this disc rot thing becoming common for Saturn games? I know CDs only have a whatever lifespan, but I've never really read into how long they may last. Now I'm kinda worried about the Saturn games I've kept around.
That's odd, it seems like the general rule of thumb is Japanese games are far far cheaper than US ones (and more likely to be complete, since the cases aren't made of hopes and wishes)
I've only found discrot on 2 Saturn games, Salamander and Xmen VS SF the latter was so minor it affects nothing at all. If you keep the games in a cool dark place they should be around and playable long after you are. The CU Podcast touched on this too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnabIGhWtqI
