Well, recently I've developed a taste for shmups, I'm really getting into them. So today I went to my locals VG-pushers looking for shmups, and I did come home with three promising games. Raystorm, G. Darius and X2 all for psx. Now my problem is with the last on, X2. When I started playing the game I found that ther was a lot of weirness on the menus in the game. the first letter of every word was wrong, like this: otart dptions dound +assword Weird... But I thought that it might be some dumb attempt to make the game "techno" .. like the sound track.. But in-game something felt wrong asswell, but I could'nt figure out what it was. Until I realised the the sound was screwy. Like the sound from my own blasting could'nt be heard, it was extremely low.. and somethimes there weren't any explosion sound when a baddie died.. This has made me start to think. I was ones told that in time data stored on cd's would start to corrupt.. could this be what's going on with my game? Or am I just a dumbass, and this is just the way this game is? Shmups.com is down, so I can't find any help there.. Well, can anybody shed some light on this matter?
Sounds like the CD is scratched badly and the game has managed to load, but got corrupt some data. Like when you sometimes get the Nintendotm text messed up sometimes on the old GameBoy's, from dirty connections.
by the way it is true sometimes the thing about the cd data can get corrupt over time and i saw a program on DR2 were they said it DR2 is a danish tv channel
Evangelion-01: try putting a CD in the sun then talk about corruption and deletion or for that matter some CD´s have even problems from when they are made by the way did you know that fungus lives well on CD´s ? and yes i know it is a ROM (read only memmory) still you can´t beat facts peace WolverineDK
Yeah, I read an article in a local newspaper this summer about 'bit rot' where the physical media of something like a CD, floppy disc, etc. begins to break down and as a result the data becomes corrupted. Apparently there's a lot of talk about cheaply made CD-R media being already susceptable to this sort of thing, and of course most old floppy media is having the same problem. I would think ROM chips would be a little less at risk, but I'm not too knowledgable about the makeup of those - it's pretty much just copper and ceramic, isn't it?
Well, some of my CD-Rs from 4 years ago have already started to rot - there's weird brown spots on the surface, and something that can be described as a "cloud" on the surface (lost its reflectiveness). Pressed discs are more sturdy, but there have been reports of those rotting, too :smt022 And yes, (mask) ROMs are sturdy. Try putting one in a bench-vise :smt043
I've seen something similar to the "fogging", Antipasta. The person I bought the CDs from ($20 for around 100 music CDs, most were still good) had left them out in the morning (early summer), and they developed "fog" spots, although I'm not sure if it's the result of moisture or not.
I had a 3DO Mind Teazzer that I bought four years ago. It had "the fog" all over the surface. I also bought the movie Phone Booth on DVD a few months back, and the inner ring is rotting away. This was a factory sealed DVD. It's an uneven black circle, that as of yet, isn't getting any worse. I kept it because I'm curious to see what happens over the coming years, and how long it takes for the disc to rot away. BTW: This is a double sided disc. Does anyone think those will be more prone to rotting away, like laserdiscs did?
