Well How did we miss this...Guardian heroes is on XBLA today Guardian Heroes is on XBLA today. Yeah I didn't realize it either I'm not too big on the saturn version but, hey I'll give it a shot on XBLA
It's been out for ages hasn't it? Anyway, don't buy that, buy Space Channel 5 part 2. It's basically the Dreamcast version complete with Dreamcast FMV (wich was pretty poor on Space Chanel 5 part 2 for some reason) and 4:3 screen suport. The only problem is that it's in English. Ulala's voice is OK but some of the male voices are anoying IMO. Oh, and some songs sound crap in English too with odd timing. Yakumo
Came out yesterday, I'm ignoring Yakumo comments as having seen his retro core video on it he clearly hasn't read the games manual and sucks big time at it. However that said this port is a bit of a mess, English translation is crap compared to the original, new graphic filter is terrible thankfully you can turn it off. Remix mode is game breaking rubbish and who ever designed it clearly doesn't understand how the game works, as it makes it rather hard to level up and make magic almost impossible to use due to the lack of MP. Front end and menus look poor, they haven't redone the intro as they did with Slivergun. Core gameplay is all there thankfully aside from one or two minor graphic bugs and mistakes along with some slightly odd and rubbish changes to the game. Doesn't control that well with the 360 pad so I highly recommend an arcade stick or saturn style pad. On the plus side the minor slowdown present in the Saturn version is gone and you can have 12 players in versus mode. Sadly it sounds good on paper but in practice 12 players is just a total mess as skill goes out the window till at least 6 players are dead and if your in the mid of the screen at the start you get attacked from both sides from the start! All in all Saturn version is better  Sega and Treasure really need to up their game as this is a disappointing port, when it should have been an easy slam dunk. If this sells well however there will be a Guardian Heroes 2, the less said about the GBA one the better.
What I want to know is why the hell does the so called "original" graphic mode looks far worse than a real Saturn on a HD TV without any nice up-scanners? RSG was the same. Why couldn't they add scan lines so at least it would look how it looked when people played it on a Saturn back in the day. It's not hard to add scan-lines at all. Yakumo
One word = Incompetence Having worked in the games industry for some time now a lot of the big companies are just badly managed. I've also found that there are a lot of people in the industry these days who want to play game and who have now grown up playing them. Problem is they don't understand how to make games. Playing games you enjoy and making games you enjoy are very different and it takes real talent and a skilled team to make a good game. Some thing sadly lacking in the big companies at the moment.
I ddn't think RS looked that bad and I am playing it with the filters off. I think the most half ass port on XBLA is 3rd strike honestly. As good as it looks it plays like crap.
What the hell are you talking about? The port of 3s is perfect, maybe your TV is laggy or something. The graphics are crap, get it right. Anyway, I'm done buying old games that are shoved on XBLA with a few filters and multiplayer support. Downloaded a US copy for Saturn and gave it a spin on my 15KHz monitor. Looks awesome!
Lack of MP in Remix mode is a pain, but I like most of the changes. Agree with the frontend menus. They didnt even make an effort. And 3rd Strike is pretty much Arcade perfect as far as gameplay, with good netcode. They added combo and parry trials. Far from half-ass IMO. Some odd bugs at launch that have mostly been sorted out.
Played it for a good 1-2 hours today. Beat Original Mode solo. Great as ever. Call me crazy but I kinda miss the slowdown. Its all been smoothed out. Also beat Remix mode via online co-op. Had smooth connections today. I still think 90% of the changes are for the better and add to the game. The misses are the slower leveling and the across-the-board MP cap. Why would a caster have the same 100MP that a fighter has? Both these things make soloing the game more difficult, but work well in co-op. Saw that it includes an Avatar shirt and helmet.
While I am personally not a fan of the scan lines, I am slightly disappointed that is not an option. I do, however appreciate that the "original" mode has "crisp" pixels. I was so pissed off at Mega Man 10 for filtering the image. About half of the SNK XBLA releases do the same.
I have an HD CRT (you SHOULD all know that by now) So it's not a huge problem for me although my Retroports came today and testing them out I did play pulse man for a bit in FUSION with scan lines on and the game did look alot better on my TV with scanlines on than off. Go figure
