Okay, I'm having a very "odd" problem with Final Fantasy 9. I've had to use 2 ps1's to play this as one of my ps1's won't read certain parts of the game while the other one dose and vice versa. Would anyone here know why this is happening or how I fix this predicament of mine?

Is there any scratch on the disk surface?

No. Just some rather "Odd" marks left over from when I tried to clean it.

Didn't the game have some kind of chip in it that could get removed if resurfaced?

Playstation game, with a chip? :|

Clean the disc again, with a damp cloth.

You are confused, there is no chip in a game disc.

The anti modchip protection was just code as part of the game.

    Hi,
From my own experience, I would first try to make an image (bin) of your disc using a software like CDRWin running on your PC. If you can complete this job without any error, I would think that the problem probably comes from your PS1 units.
    Hope that helps !...

Different lasers and drives have different tolerances. I have a FF7 disc that can barely be read on one of my PlayStation's, but on another identical model, it reads fine.. Everything else including my Macs read the bad disc too. But that PlayStation with the problem, read all the other games in my collections fine also.

Could try getting a new laser assembly. I have bought a few from an ebay seller based in HK. I was worried at first due to the cheap price and location but they work like a charm and look identical to the original. No more dodgy reads or console on it's side :)

Your laser could also need calibration or replacement. But if this is the only disc you have trouble with it's more likely something wrong with the disc.

How would I calibrate the lens? I haven't really messed around with my systems enough to know how to do stuff like that.

You'll probably have to find a guide on how to perform the adjustments correctly. I don't have a link on hand though. But to be clear, if only 1 disc has this trouble, it's more likely a defect in the disc than a problem with your laser assembly. I don't advise messing with it if everything else works fine. You could try a different copy of the disc, even a CD-R if you have a modchip.

You said the disc had strange marks on it. That suggests a disc problem is a possibility. It's possible with the right technique the disc could be cleaned of those marks.

Yeah I'd have to say its the disc as all my other games seem to work fine.
