Alright, well to start things off, I'm not the one considering using it. My naive Grandmother met some lady on Facebook that "makes" quilts and sells them to make money. My grandmother is wanting to buy a quilt for my 6 year old brother's build, and I know, it's pointless. However, she wants to use westernunion to transfer the money, gives reasons to not use paypal, and doesn't have any proper reputation ratings other than random comments on Facebook which could have been falsified. To me? It looks like a scam, and my grandmother is going to be out a 100 dollars for a crappy quilt and a pillow, but she believes anything people tell her, so it's frustrating to try to prevent her from getting screwed over. Can anyone here list what you think about the situation, experiences with WU, and anything else that make help me convince her not to get scammed. Thanks for reading, -- CK
Their's a reason why those people who live in nigeria and have millions they want to give to you for free use it. It's difficult to chargeback. easy to close account and dissapear without a trace pretty much. Find a nice big list of horror stories and show her them. Hell if she really wants to buy a quilt for a kid I'll see if my grandma can still knit.
When sending money western union (last I used it was literally over a decade ago) You have to put not only there name but city and postal code if I remember right. If it were my family I thought was going to get scammed I'd at the least call this lady up, check that her phone number is one right for the city she says she's in and do a search on her phone number as well to see if it comes up with the name she's given. Maybe even ask for some better pics of the goods.
Her number, location, and all of that check out, I've already looked into that. She's an American by the way, lives in Indiana. I just don't trust her because she's so insistent on getting the money as fast as she can.
If I receive money via Western Union, I have no problem as it's as good as cash. If I have to send money to someone via Western Union, unless your a friend or family I won't do it. No exceptions!
Yeah, like I said, it's her friend off FB, just a -shudder- farmville buddy. Why do middleage and older women get into that PoS game?!
This is pretty much exactly what I said, she doesn't know this woman, but she trusts anyone blindly. It's really baffling how I turned out to be so different from my naive family.
Here is a simple test: If you can't physically go and punch them in the face or break their legs, then they arn't Western Union material.
