I was just thinking about it, and the goals/reasons that motivated me to collect games and consoles have gradually changed over time. Sometimes it is due to becoming interested in related consoles or games based on other items I purchased, and sometimes it is due to identifying "sub collections" within my overall game collection, and thinking of interesting ways that would further flesh out a theme within the overall game collection in a way that I'm interested in (e.g.: collect 1990s atari consoles is a theme within my overall game collecting) I'd never put the motivations down as a list before, but thinking of the different interests and motivations which I've fulfilled, which are currently in progress to different degrees, and which I'm currently interested in, the list started to sound like a list of achievements. Here are some of them: [x] Collect interesting looking dreamcast games that have 4 player capabilities (this was an old goal of mine that drove a lot of my game purchases back in ~2001) [x] Collect 3d dreamcast arcade style games, including later period Japanese releases, that represent well the graphical capabilities of the DC [x] Collect the majority of capcom releases for the DC since they tend to be high quality games [x] Buy original xbox and certain games that are sequels or otherwise related to dreamcast games I enjoyed (basically, I regarded this as an extension of my dreamcast collection) [x] Buy an atari lynx 1 and an assortment of specific games that I have nostalgic memories of [x] Buy an atari lynx 2 and a Jaguar to round out a collection of 1990s atari game system hardware (I loved the lynx 1 and the lynx got me into the jag, ultimately getting the lynx 2 was to round things out and sate my curiosity) [x] Buy Jaguar CD to add to collection of 1990s atari hardware (after thinking about it for a year, I finally took the plunge and bought one tonight) [ ] Buy an atari 7800 to go with the lynxes and jaguar and 90s atari collection (would look good on the shelf, and I would have a console that plays my 2600 games again) [ ] Buy Xevious on atari 7800, which serves my interest in vertical shmups and is consistent with having a representative vertical shmup on each atari console: Jag (Raiden) and Lynx (Zarlor Mercenary) [wip] Buy a genesis/sega 32x and its 3D polygon based games to represent a neglected period of gaming history and the evolution of 3D gaming (collecting for Jag got me more interested in this) - the 32x would also be consistent with an interest I have and a theme that's developing in my overall collection, of owning unpopular/overlooked or commercial failure game systems and games such as dreamcast, jaguar and lynx. [ ] Buy Blackthorne on 32x because it is overlooked and I enjoyed the game on the pc, the 32x version has different graphics that represent well the capabilities of the 32x, and because I like the overall style (graphics, music, character, concept) [ ] Buy Knuckles Chaotix on 32x because it is the black sheep of sonic games and I like the overall style (graphics, music, characters, concept) Lesser motivations [ ] Consider buying a sega saturn model 1 to represent a neglected period of game history and round out what could easily be a 90s sega black console collection (already have a black dreamcast and would expect a black genesis/32x) [ ] Consider buying sequels and prior games in series for games I enjoy on 32x and on Dreamcast (e.g.: Stellar Assault, Virtua Fighter series, DOA, etc) - this would probably be a long expensive motivation that would last years before I would call it "complete". It's something I've thought of which interests me, but would be contingent on finishing some of my other more current goals/motivations and remaining interested in the idea of a saturn.
[x] Play some of the games I played as a kid with my kids [x] Mess with old stuff using superior future technology of today
[x] Experience, enjoy and preserve the coveted childhood technology that I could only read about or view from a glass case.
[ ] Collect loose games and make the complete. [ ] Eventually get all games CIB. [ ] Buy broken stuff and repair it. [ ] Buy scratched discs and resurface them. These goals will never be 100% complete, but I try to use these as my guidelines, I enjoy fixing stuff.
I guess one of my realistic goals would be to own all releases of Vigilante games. I have close to all of them at the moment, apart from the Gameboy version and Japanese releases.
[] replace all games with missing spine cards with complete copies [] buy games for all the loose spine cards I have (oh I wish #1 and #2 would cancel each other out!!) [] buy boxed copies of all loose Famicom games which I accumulated over the years (~30) Longterm [] complete collection of Japanese non-Sony video games 1983-2005 (only ~10,000 to go! yay)
Obtain these CIB: 1-More attainable for 2015: [ ] Mint Green Tales of Symphonia GC. [ ] Tales of Symphonia GC [ ] Tales of Symphonia DC [ ] Tales of Symphonia PS3 Collector's Edition [ ] Tales of Xilia 2 2-Open goals, so if I can clear one or some of them this year, that would be awesome: [ ] Hagane [ ] EVO [ ] Nosferatu [ ] Keio Flying Sqadron [ ] Snatcher [ ] Shining Force III [ ] Burning Rangers [ ] Little Samson
My goal is to set up a game room when I purchase my own house. It will have 3 different TVs for gaming, #1 Sony PVM/BVM, #2 Standard CRT (Atari 2600/5200/7800) and #3 LED. At the moment I'm only approximately 6 consoles short of having every console i want.
[x] get a complete Dreamcast PAL-set [ ] find and collect all Dreamcast PAL demo discs [ ] find and collect unreleased Dreamcast games [ ] find and collect all white-label promotional Dreamcast discs
Good to see some other Dreamcast collectors here. Gary Walton (contact: dreamcasting@btinternet.com ) can help you out with that. I just bought a PAL copy of Half-Life from him. The sets he puts together with the covers and manuals look really good. Can't wait for the game to come in the mail.
