I've played a lot of really punishing games (especially on the NES) such as Battletoads, The Adventures of Batman & Robin on the Sega Genesis, the NTSC version of Shadow of the Beast on the Genesis, the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Silver Surfer, Air Fortress, so on a so forth but i want to know, which really difficult games you games have played? Just curious...
Two games that have thwarted me to this day are Jewel Master for the Sega Genesis and Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. Terminator for Sega Genesis is another pain but I have completed it once. There are many more but those stand out.
Megaman X6 on hard mode. While I personally love this game to death it's brutal if youre going for 100%. Any single lost reploid mean you failed and to most Megaman X series players they often don't like both X6 and X5. It's very rare to find someone that likes both equally due to them having to very different difficulties.
For some reason, I can't even finish level 2 of Volgarr the Viking (I played the DC version, if you didn't already know). It may not be objectively the hardest game ever, but it seems tailor-made to be hard for me.
One of my all time favorite two player Sega Genesis games. Incredibly fun two player game. Also has a great FM synthesis NIN sounding soundtrack.
Somehow, the Turbo Tunnel on the SNES game is somehow harder than the NES counterpart. I've cleared that section without dying only once the SNES. Fun fact: This is no joke, but one of the programmers of the game actually worked on the Zelda CDI games by (Link & Zelda FYI). Oh and hell yeah, Jesper Kyd's OST is awesome I like both X5 & X6 (i still have my save file with all the Reploids rescued). But man, Extreme mode is just ridiculous. Jewel Master is a fun game (made by Ancient BTW!). Genesis Terminator is decent as well but the Sega CD game kicks ass! Oh and screw Alma OG Ninja Gaiden X'D It requires both patience & memorization of the enemy placement. It's doable so don't give up! Other ones i should add since i just remembered them right now are Sub-Terrania & Red Zone on the Genesis + Comix Zone, Altered Beast & The Revenge of Shinobi on Hardest. I also finished Axelay on the 2nd hard loop by racking lives from playing on Easy for a total of 4 complete loops. Cho Ren Sha 68K for the X68000 & Windows is hard enough but the second loop is crazy! Excellent doujin by the way. Recca on the NES as well (including the Hard mode) & Mr. Gimmick with the best ending.
Try editing your last post instead of posting multiple times in succession. It's unclean and frowned upon. I kinda gave up on Volgarr a long ago. Might revisit it though.
Agh! Revenge of Shinobi. Now U've opened an old wound. Managed to complete it once, the end boss was a beast!
Liking both is not uncommon, both have their goods and bads, but to a degree of being equal on difficulty X5 is MILES more casual friendly than X6 is in both platforming and enemies (except the shadow devil, that spike on X6 is basically the consistency you see in X6) What I'm saying is the more into the X5/X6 game you get, the more you dislike the other one. Like X6 is a pain in the ass to be consistent on, where X5 its a breeze. Armors in X6 are diverse but have immense drawbacks, X5 this is not an issue. Bosses are inherently difficult (except sheldon, except when hes on xtreme mode or in the prototype holy shit). On top of this bugs that existed in X5 that were fixed caused X6 to retain some of these bugs. This is notably seen on X5's beta with Zero where his sabre deals damage every frame and doesnt cap. This bug was fixed but on X6 this can show itself with sheldon's weapon where every frame it flickers is a frame the sabre deals damage (under the condition youre hitting them with sheldon's shield active on top of the hitbox). The easiest answer to the X5 vs X6 issue is just to not play both and stick to X4
I often hit reply, and cut out the stuff I dont need because it's faster for me. I'm used to typing them frequently (though here they get messy if you dont close them or just type one)
I agree. If you beat Shield Sheldon with Zero, man...his ability (although not apparent in your first playthrough) cancels the invincibility frame of the mavericks & combined with Zero's dash-cancel trick then you're almost unbeatable. Even on Xtreme mode and moreso with Black Zero.
It in fact does NOT cancel it. It just makes every frame of the animation deal damage. You can trigger the invincibility frames on the third sabre swing even if that ability and bug are active, causing a ton of *tink* sounds indicating no damage is being dealt. The frames only show up on certain animations of damage dealing. On the third swing even if sheldon's ability is active it will trigger invincibility frames on the first frame. This is why SDC (sword dash cancel) cancels the third sing and keeps their invincibility frames from ever being triggered. Black zero is just zero with a different armor colour and a few inherent upgrades built in. Code: The effects of the Black Zero enhancement are not consistent throughout the games it appears in. In its first appearance in X4, it is simply aesthetic and has no effect on his combat abilities. In X5 and X6, it enhances his defense and saber power, and also adds 50% to Zero's weapon energy, like all of X's armors in these games do. However, three power-up parts will be automatically added for black armor in both games if he has them: [*]In X5, Black Zero has Shock Buffer (Damage & stun are reduced by half), Shot Eraser (Z-Saber can destroy enemies' energy shots akin to Tenkuuha) and Virus Buster (Z-Saber can destroy Sigma Virus drones). [*]In X6, Black Zero's Virus Buster is replaced by Z-Saber Plus (Damage per Z-Saber's slash is increased) . This replacement is obviously due to the disappearance of Sigma Virus drones & Zero Virus drones (following X5 canon that Eurasia is successfully destroyed by either Enigma or Shuttle).
I have bested this..twice I think, read somewhere you have to keep hammering jump at the last segment which I never would have figured out on my own. Never beat the snake level afterwards, though. --- Had to muscle my way through Ikaruga - played it for so long that I unlocked infinite continues, never got a single A rank! Radiant Silvergun bodied me as well..
Damn, that's cool! I've yet to finish Ikaruga. I've finished Gradius III on SNES with Arcade difficulty. I've beated Super R-Type on Hard but it'll rape you brutally on Pro once you get to Stage 6. D-Force on Hard gives you nothing but pure bullshit. I've also finished Raiden Trad on the SNES as well on the highest difficulty settings but i gotta finish it also on Genesis.
One game continues to strike fear into me by name alone due to its punishing difficulty, and that's Karnov...
I Wanna Be The Guy, but that one might not count since the whole purpose is to be punishing. I know the final dungeon in Japanese Final Fantasy III is an absolute bear.
