So I'm getting a "3DS" system for a family of friends for Christmas and I'm kind of strung on which system to get. Ideally I want to get the 2DS for many reasons, namely because it's the cheapest, the most sturdiest for children, the most beneficial for children's eyes and it's probably the best size and shape for my mates huge hands. The only thing that bothers me is what people have described as "lower quality" face buttons which I think might be an issue for my friend who really appreciates quality, and I'm curious to hear what other people think about the d-pad and face buttons which have deviated from the 3DS' design. Are they as spongy as people make them out to be? Does it hamper the experience at all? Or is all this just making noise over spilled milk? I know that my friend will want to play a lot of DS games such as the Castlevania games which focus a lot on the d-pad and I'd want them to get the best experience possible, but obviously with compromises. The alternative is just to get a 3DS however I know right now that the 2DS is the right system to get it's just the issue with the buttons I'm concerned about not having access to a unit to try first hand. Can anyone give me their opinions on the matter? How do you feel about the buttons and does it effect your experience? How do they compare to other systems? Any input is much appreciated.
Maybe my opinion is different from most people's as I stand Mega Drive 3 button controllers, but anyway I tried the 2DS last month and I liked it. Feels like a quite well-put machine overall, I'd get a 2DS over a 3DS anyday.
I've used one, and it's atrocious. The button layout is BAD. Not to mention, if you buy a used 3DS you only spend $10 more and it's 100% better than the 2DS. I almost got one and after ample testing (playing 3 different games over an hour) I can concur unless you want a Tiger electronic, don't get it. Just don't.
Interesting, one good review and one bad review. Nobody else used the 2DS? It surprises me that Nintendo would cut back on the buttons, I can't imagine it being very costly, although the shoulder buttons do look a big improvement. I have to admit, the more I look at the machine the more it actually appeals to me, I don't really care about the 3D feature, the clam shell design nor the gloss finish of the standard 3DS, I actually like the slate design a lot more. It would just be a shame if the controls are as bad as some people make them out to be.
Even for DS games? I imagine some sprite based games would look pretty poor with such large screens at a higher resolution?
It doesn't stretch DS games, it's just like how the original DS with a larger screen would play GBA games. It defaults the picture to it's normal size on the DS screen, but you can press a button ( I don't remember which) to stretch it full screen.
That functionality is the other way around for me. It defaults to Stretched unless I hold down (Start? Select?) before selecting.
