As we all know, many consoles with light colors, such as white and light gray, will often turn a yellow color as they get older. Which brings me to the Famicom: is it suppose to be white, or a creamy-white color? The picture on Wikipedia, as well as the console's packaging looks creamy-white to me, but I've seen photos of the console that look more white. Any clues?
A pure white? Here's a photo of the Famicom box, I dunno, it looks kinda creamy to me: So if it's suppose to be white, does that mean the burgandy parts are suppose to be pure red?
It's a white colour, it's not an off white but it's white. Same colour as a white wall. Photos won't do justice. I own one and it's white not a cream colour you're saying. The other colour is burgundy/blood red.
I was also wondering if the famicom was not naturally "cream" Mine is certainly approaching "custard" color... Here is a post by a guy who tried retrobright on his Famicom. The thing came back pretty damn white!! Its in french but the pictures speak for themselves. http://scanlines16.com/blog-3/retro-gaming/gb/jai-teste-le-retr0bright/
Thanks for your input guys! Yeah, looks like it's suppose to be white, but many have yellowed slightly. I dunno, the creamy white and burgundy color scheme is such a perfect 80s style, I thought that's how it was suppose to be!
Photos are difficult to use for evidence in this matter as the Famicom "white" differs depending on exposure, flash, angle and background light. The natural Famicom-white is slightly cream-colored and not 100% white, though still pretty white. Generally Famicoms tend to look whiter on photos than they really are if the photo was taken with a flash, and more yellow if it was taken without a flash in a darker environment.
here is the real box, you note the Nintendo logo, the model number on the box. The lack of Turbo buttons and the microphone on joypad 2.
i used to have that exact clone years ago and it was creamy white. not %100 white. no idea about the real deal, as i haven't seen one when they were popular and not yellowed like now.
Bumping this thread since I now own a Famicom! I'm still not sure Famicoms are suppose to be pure white. I say this based on my Famicom, when I got it, you could tell it had yellowed slightly since the plastic under the stickers was lighter than the surrounding plastic. However, the plastic on the inside (i.e the part that would never see sunlight) was not white, it was the same color as the plastic under the stickers. Now, normally when a console is yellow on the inside, that means it's suffering from yellowing due to oxygen exposure. I don't think this is the case with my Famicom because: 1) It's only slightly yellowed, in my experience, when a console yellows due to oxygen, they REEEEEEALLY turn yellow. 2) The plastic under the stickers is sealed away from oxygen, yet is the same color. I've given it a bout of Betr0brighting, and I've gotten the plastic to turn into the same color as the plastic under the sticker, but that's as far as it will go. I'm thinking maybe we're being mislead due to the picture on the box. It also shows the red parts as a bright, blood red color, but I've never seen a Famicom like that. What do you guys think?
It's more of a burnt red, not blood red. Unless it changed throughout the process of the Famicom. Much like you see certain XBOX systems with a greenish black instead of solid black in the later revisions. My Famicom is a solid white, not pure white. I wouldn't be too fussed about it, enjoy your Famicom Think of it this way. Yellow = fucked / White = good.
Watching Retro Game Master, I always thought it was more of a yellow color that matched the gold on the controllers. The thought of bringing it back to its original white color seems kinda unappealing to me. Heh.
unfortunately it becomes piss-yellow not gold-yellow by time. thinking again that is what gold-shower comes from, right? :smile-new: i try to keep my consoles from sunlight and as the previous owners did so too i have a cream white snes and av famicom.
On the console itself, yeah, but if you look at the box, it's depicted as a bright red color. Did you modify your console in some way to make it white? Here's a comparison of my Famicom next to something made of white plastic (ice cube tray) under natural sunlight (for a few seconds!). You can see the difference, as well as that the plastic under the warning sticker and the plastic on the outside are now the same color after Retr0brighting: And now that I look more closely at my Famicom's box, the "white" plastic of the console on the front of the box is indeed more of a creamy-white, not a pure white like in the photo of the Famicom box above. It actually looks just like the color my Famicom is. However, the red parts are a much brighter red than the actual console :\ I dunno guys, I'm thinking the Famicom isn't suppose to be the pure white color I've seen on the internet.
