I'm bored (supposed to be writing a report for work, but it's boring , so...) so I thought I'd make a thread about something I and a work colleague were discussing in the week; what console has the best overall ratio of good to bad games. Not the console with the most good games necessarily, but the one with the most good games and the fewest bad. Of course, it's impossible to say objectively which console fits the bill best, since a 'good' or 'bad' game is subjective in itself (unless the game is very good or very bad, in which case common consensus is a fair guide to the game's quality). Anyway, I think it might be the PC Engine, or the Neo-Geo , as even though I've personally only played a few PC Engine or Neo-Geo games, both consoles seem to have very good libraries according to what I've read and I don't recall reading much about their having many bad games. I would say the N64, but it does have a lot of 'filler' (to me) games, such as multiple same sport games), and quite a few bad, or at leash not too great, games. My mate reckons it's the SNES, what do you think? And what console has the worst ratio of good to bad games? The Wii? The Amstrad GX 4000?
I second the SNES. Genesis/Mega Drive is closely tied with it. As for the worst, Atari Jaguar, Wii, Virtual Boy and Atari 2600.
I also agree with the SNES. Whenever I buy a SNES game lot, there's always something in there that I've never heard of that actually turns out to be a great game (eg. Hyperzones, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja). However there are a lot of sports titles so that might skew it a bit. If it's not the SNES, I think it would have to be the Xbox 360 in my opinion.
I never really had an SNES or spent a lot of time exploring the library of the SNES so I cant really say on that but I have spent quite a bit of time exploring the library of the original xbox and xbox 360 and would have to say those have quite a good ratio.
Neo Geo AES... Assuming you don't hate the fighting genre there are only a couple of truly bad games on that system.
I think it varies on taste. Like it was said before, Neo Geo has a super high ratio if you like figthing and arcade style games. But if you're into RPG, then it's one of the worst. Me for example, I barely like any N64 games, but I like almost every Dreamcast games. Objectively, somebody could count the bad games on Metacritic and report it on the number of games.
I think I'd go with the Dreamcast, at least in the US. It only had about 250 games, and at least a dozen top tier games, and a lot of good ones too. For worst, the 2600, Wii, NES (yes there's great games, but a lot of garbage too), either 3D0 or CDi too.
Neo Geo wins! more than 80% good games. It's like Ferrari - it will be the worst choice... if you want to fly. There's not even a single RPG on AES/MVS. Only one on NGCD. I'm sure that CDI or Pippin will beat even Atari 2600 because 90% of games were absolute garbage. For Virtual Boy - system was bad but some games are fun to play, especially when you do it on emulator with proper 3D glasses so your eyes won't bleed in 10 minutes.
SNES is my favourite console, but I don't think the ratio of good:bad games is good at all, at least looking at all the JPN releases. FC/SFC were far and away the most popular, so they tended to get all the shovelware, too. PC Engine/Megadrive seem to have a much better ratio to me - less pachinko and better ports. I'd agree that NeoGeo AES definitely has the best ratio of "good" games.
I swear, my eyes should have exploded in their sockets given the way people talk about it, but I never had a problem. And this is coming from a person who got wicked eye strain from old CRT computer monitors set at lower than a 75 or 80Hz refresh rate. As for the ratio, I think systems with a small library would have the edge, given the amount of shovel ware the popular consoles get. Surprise surprise, I think the Virtual boy has a pretty good ratio, really only two games I'd call terrible. Neo Geo AES/CD is probably one of the best though, how could you go wrong with solid arcade games? Worst ratio I'd give to Game.com, don't think it has any good games.
Apparently there is one good game on it! It would be close between this and the CD-i. Unless you call what came out for the Nuon "games"... hehe
Neo Geo with Dremcast in second. Surprised people are saying the N64. It has about 250 games and only about 8 or 9 of them are worst playing if you ask me.
Neo Geo AES most likely, since even the boring sports games are made with exciting effects and themes.
