I vary from time to time, a while ago it was the Supervision/Quickshore thing, then the Amstrad GX5000 thing

But as a rule, things that are just a bit different and rare(ish) like my dummy 360 console, or promo copies of games , or the squishy foam game cubes givej out at E3 or the Zelda DS demo that kind of stuff

I like to get dev/proto stuff, but as they are just paper weights, don`t go to mad on them

Basically whatever video gaming item my hands (or the average Joe's hands) are not supposed to touch, aside from developers.

I collect mostly jpn games only, except for some common titles for common consoles like Xbox.

I like shoot'em ups (rare? They are rather easy to come by on the net but impossible to get without, so maybe they are rare, yes) and weird games like Densha de GO or some other simulations of normal life jobs.
Furthermore there is my addiction to huge and nice Limited Editions from Japan, which I consider quite rare over here.

Something REALLY rare and what I've already been searching for a long time is Densha de GO! Shinkansen and Ryou-jou-hen for PS2, both as Controller+Game-Packs. They are fucking impossible to get, even in Japan. I asked in every shop and none had it - not even the 1st release of Shinkansen seperately. :(

I mostly consider rare to be equal to access, which usually goes hand in hand with quantity but not always. For some rare items you can buy them today if you want as long as you have the money. Other items were perhaps produced in the same numbers but you hardly ever see them for sale, meaning even if you have the cash you aren't going to get one. To me that's more "rare."

The GameCube Chrystal Chonicles console comes to mind. There were only 100 or so made, but there is usually at least one available on Yahoo Japan at any given time. It's rare but you can buy it today if you want it. On the other hand you might have to wait 6 months or so to get a Casio PV-2000 even tho they were produced in higher nuimbers and there are more of them out there.

as for my definition of rare is something that isn't available for a everyone. in other word, either it's hard to get (due to its small quantity) or cost the hell (also due to its small quantity, but not due to its high popularity only).
so in other other words, something that only a few people (1 up to maybe a few hundreds only) on our planet earth actually can call a personal belonging.

    Ex:
so as for a dracula x for PC engine is considered as mid-expensive but anything else as rare, since you can get this one all over the earth at anytime if willing to pay the cash.

but for a Power league gold hucard, which isn't easy to get as well would cost you the hell of money, i've consider to call a rare object.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen both of these come up on Yahoo recently. I even saw an unopened copy of the 1st rel of Shinkansen a couple of weeks back. If you're talking new & unopened for the controller+game combos, then yes - you don't see many in that state.

Personally, I don't collect because of rarity, as much as the personal satisifaction of owning neat things. Sure, rarity is a factor in that, but more dominant factors are usually nostalgia/unique+interesting design/something new to tinker+experiment with. Very little of what I own doesn't get used for something. I'm rarely able to keep something factory sealed for long & I've never liked the idea of keeping things in locked, glass cases. The stuff is there to play with!

hardware mostly, leaning towards old import and grey- or black-market stuff (multicarts, famiclones, copiers, etc)

also lately i have been into pachinko machines (got two so far, both from 1960s i think) and mopeds.

Ah well, I just picked up a copy for $67 including shipping on ebay, so it wasn't too bad. I wonder if people could become rich by doing a export business from Japan...Buy some cheap old games, and sell them on ebay for profit...

Did I mention I collect home ports of Street Fighter Zero 3 (all I need is SFA Antology atm) ?
It wasn't really a conscious move on my part, I just moved up the ladder from GBA (horrible) to PSX (passable) to DC (could be good but unplayable with the pad) to Saturn, and a PSP copy to play on the go :)

I'm aware of yahoo in that case and yes, there's always one or more controller+game-packs for sale. I was just talking about the real shops in Japan and the only DDGO! controllers that I found were the Saturn, Dreamcast and Wii ones (which I wasn't interested in: a complete mint controller für like 60 cents and the shipping is gonna kill you afterwards).

I think I will obtain the Shinkansen and Ryojouhen ones via yahoo one day.

I found the Shinkensen and Type 2 controllers in akihabara and in a local hard off store. The only two PS(2) controllers I am missing now is the Ryojouhen one but that goes for a lot of money on Yahoo Japan (Y15,000 or so) and the Densha De Go Gold controller. (Ignoring the bundle game packs). Did the Shinkensen controller come with a bundled game?

There were both bundle- and single-packs of each, Wii and PS2 Shinkansen.

Things that there are very very little of in the world like unrealesed games, hardware, peripherals or things that are very hard to get i consider to be rare.

I can't collect rare items because I'm poor. So I usually try to impress people with my large stack of crappy Xbox games.

I wanted that Dinobasher too but the missus thought a dining room table was more important than a game. I was quite happy eating on my knees on the sofa ;-).

Seems to be a handy hint if you are a collector, don't get married. ;-)
