I've been coding N64 in some fashion for well over a year and a half now - developing my own tools and building up a decent codebase. The problem is that I can't come up with good ideas. Most homebrew games are simple - I'm looking for a simple game design that would be interesting to play - tetris, sokoban, etc... although those have been well worn out. IMO Anyway among many other projects this has come the closest to fruitition - but is it even worth playing? N64 rom image - 8mbit. Plays in PJ64 and on the real thing if you have a backup unit http://retroactive.be/fcube.v64 I'd really appreciate some game ideas in general - the simpler, the better, because there's a greater chance I will be able to accomplish it with my elusive spare time. For a while I've been studying car physics and handling - does something like a stylized rally racer have any appeal?
Well I gotta say; that looks awesome! Not sure about the rally game, why not do a N64 version of Death Tank?
Great stuff! Just a question: Does it have sound? (I ask because I'm having a bunch of troubles with my PC, so I think that it can be a problem of mine) Keep working! ^_^
Wow that looks great! I will test it in my V64Jr as soon as I can get a hold of some batteries. Ideas....hmmm...ever considered a shmup? For some reason I cannot get enough lately.
I think it's very very good. Nice job. I myself would be interested in seeing some Rally game. A psychadelic/trippy kind of rally game with emphasis on power-slides (something between mariokart and f-zero X I guess)
that looks and feels damn nice, fine work And yeah, it's always hard to get some good ideas. Try lurking around in the indie dev scene. tigsource.com has threads about game ideas quite often and lostgarden.com is a blog dedicated to game design and has one or two nice ideas for a game.
A shmup would be a good choice and would get you a bigger audience I reckon. Edit: Just tried the game via emulation. A VERY impressive job and fun to play too. Well done!
Thanks for the encouragement so far. I think I'll let this game rest in peace - it's got a few bugs that cause it to crash and I really don't feel like hunting them down. Kind of a cool proof-of-concept. I'm going with the racer design - rally would be more fun but also require more work programming terrain physics. Something like a drifting game would allow me to make use of cool physics on a flat plane (street). as for what I'm using to make these things.... well, PsyQ C compiler, libultra, F3DEX microcode, and a doctor v64. Much er... simpler than OO crap like Java
You know even if this game sucks donkey nuts you have my respect. anybody that can code for a console and make a remotely presentable game has my respect.
Will try this when I get home. Game ideas....maybe Blast Corps II :icon_bigg I think a 3D shmup would be best choice. Would a game like Ether Vapour be possible on the N64? HTML: http://shootthecore.blogspot.com/2007/08/ether-vapor-still-impressive.html
Its a doujin game. It is indeed a very cool game, mixes vert/hori/panzer dragoon shooting action. Very good graphically too. ver 1.07 here - thats from the official site. http://edelwiss.sakura.ne.jp/works/ethervapor/download.html I think ver 1.08 just includes an extra level. I think you could only get it at Comiket 72 - I don't know if that going to be released on the net for a while. I don't own an N64 but would it be capable of something similar?
If anyone cares, this prompted me to put up shots of my latest game Cardrop. It is running on the Xbox 360 (XNA). :110:
Good work! Have you done any demo scene work? Game looks somehow inspired by it I like the font you used btw
