I'm still not sure how I feel about Sonic CD. I know at first I hated it a lot, but know I think I can see why some people like it. Have not finished it yet. Still, I would like to know what is it that people like about it, or why some people say that it's the best 2D Sonic ever.
Did the JP soundtrack see a release as a CD album? I'd love to own it if so, I'd like the Past Music also.. If not I might just buy the commercial release and have to make do without the Past audio =(
i dont understand how some tracks were left redbook while others weren't. Anyone have a theory or explanation for this?
Possibly because they didn't have enough CD space to do all of them? I haven't looked into it, but thats my assumption.
My guess is that the past tunes are some PCM/Genesis audio and the PC version can't play them back since it's not a Sega CD...or something.
Ugh, I misread the question. I'd agree here. Seems odd they didn't just use MIDI, but I suppose that wouldn't do the audio justice or preserve it's quality.. Perhaps Sonic CD as a computer program took less space than the code for the Mega CD, so they had space to fit it on in Redbook? *Shrug*
My issue with Sonic CD/PC is simply that it's never been on a mainstream platform (bearing in mind the MegaCD was only ever an add-on), so it's never quite had the same exposure as other games featuring Sega's mascot character. Of course, years later it finally reached a greater audience as part of the Gems Collection, but who cared after Sonic's downfall following such artistic failures as Heroes and then Shadow? Had this decent-enough title received a port for the Saturn things might be different, though in more recent times it was more a case of too little too late... or at least in my opinion!
Was the ISO-9660 standard formally extended to 700 MB back in 1994? I seem to recall some debate over whether or not any drives would read past the original 650 MB limitation. Obviously that's not an issue now, but it might explain the PCM audio issue if there simply wasn't enough room.
I have it, Japanese version... and hmmmm.... Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my favourite, by a long, long way. Sonic 4 or any future sonic game should be made as a fast but gorgeous 2D platformer - with sprites or cell-shading. I am sick of this polygon crap on the DS/PSP and the 360 could easily churn out a massive 2D platform game. Sonic CD never really has flow and I never feel in control. I want to rescue Amy though. My girlfriend will have a go at me if I don't, so that's why I am currently playing it.
I love all the Mega Drive Sonics, each in their own way.. it's hard to choose just one as each has a special place in my heart. The 8-bit Sonics, too..
Ugh, guys, this is bugging me so much. Check this music http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YYvJiYy5fiw&fmt=18 (Wacky Workbench Past) The melody at 0.16-0.30 reminds me of another track, possibly from another Sonic game. Can anyone shed any light?
Me neither. Sonic 2 is probably the Sonic game I've played the most, I still complete it several times a year at least, it's kind of a drunken ritual for me and my mates. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is fantastic, and probably objectively a more rounded experience than Sonic 2. My personal favourite though, for nostalgia reasons alone, is Sonic 1 on the SMS. God I love that game.
I probably said this before, but I'm pretty sure Sonic 1 on the SMS is the first video game I ever played..
Sonic 1 Game Gear I imagine is like the SMS one, the music kicks ass! What's that game?? I think I'm too young here.
Yeah Game Gear and Master System versions are near identical apart from resolution and some music differences. I initially thought (when I was wee) that the 'Gear versions ran faster due to it's faster CPU, when really it was just the Master System versions were running in PAL-o-VISION. So 'Gear versions are superior for me!
