I've been wondering for a long time. Also, do other codes exist for the PS and PS2? Not counting limited editions and other "special" items.
Those three are for NTSC-J versions of PSX games. The SCPS is for first party. The other 2 are 3rd party. What they actually stand for... I don't know. There's also SLES and SCES for PAL. SCUS and SLUS for NTSC-U. I think these 2 sets of codes obviously use 'E' for Europe and 'U' for USA.
pretty much it. here's the meaning of the acronyms http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?45473-What-do-the-SLUS-SCES-SLES-numbers-mean
If SLPS, SLUS, and SLES are third party then the "L" likely stands for "Licensed." So the whole thing could possibly be "Sony Licensed (PlayStation/US/European) Software", which would make SCPS, SCUS, and SCES "Sony Created (PlayStation/US/European) Software". That's just a guess, but it makes sense to me. No idea what the "M from SLPM could mean.
Thanks for the info and link! If so, then how comes all Asian PS games are SCPS? When you say first party, you mean published by Sony (even though the game has nothing to do with Sony)? Because among all SCPS games there are many which are not developed/published/distributed by Sony. As for what they mean, seems your link does not give the answer... Let me guess: SC = Sony Computer? SL = Sony Licensed? 3rd letter would be the geographical area, P for Japan and Asia (haven't checked Korea, did they get localised games?), E for Europe and U for North America 4th letter I still have no clue
Posted at the same time Funny they would use E and U for Europe and USA, but P for everything Japanese and Asian in general. S for software makes sense though.
What does SCPH stand for? Sony Computer ?? Hardware? All PS1 hardware has the SCPH prefix I think, regardless of the region.
or perhaps 'house'? .... referring to devs and their base of operation/HQ used to be as such! ... speculation this end, worth getting a FULL key to all the console software/hardware id's then the letters and numbers make sense. only on a single manufacturer basis. afaik, there's NO international standard! .. [edit] typo...
Yes, Sony Computer PlayStation Hardware. There also SLPH, SLEH and SLUH. As for the games: NTSC|U/C = NTSC: USA/Canada SCUS = Sony Computer USA/Canada Software SLUS = Sony Licensed USA/Canada Software LSP = LightSpan Sofware PlayStation Some US games have also PSRM, which according to GameRave is a US exclusive printer's mark. PAL SCES = Sony Computer Europe Software SLES = Sony Licensed Europe Software SCED = Sony Computer Europe Demo NTSC|J SCPS = Sony Computer PlayStation Software SLPS = Sony Licensed PlayStation Software SLPM = Sony Computer PlayStation ??? SIPS = Sony ??? PlayStation Software Anyway, theres some other weird designations like PBPX, SPUS, ESPM, PAPX, PCPD, PCPX,... Check Sonyindex.com for some crazy codes.
