Some time back (at least five years, I think, maybe a few years longer) an unreleased commercial game was made available. It was a first person shooter, where you shot zombies, and it started out in a house or apartment. It would have been either on the original XBox, or the PC, as they were the only two machines I had that could run non-commercial code. I think it was on the PC, and for some reason it had been abandoned before it was ready for commercial release, and someone had found a copy and made it available for download. I don't think I got it from Assembler Games, as I think this was before I knew of this site.

I know this is vague, and I'm sorry. What I know for definite is that it was never commercially released (so it was not Left For Dead, Dead Island, Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green, etc), it was a first person shooter, and it was not a mod for another game (so it wasn't Killing Floor, The They Hunger trilogy, etc). Well, it might have been a commercial game that had been modded to be this new zombie shooter, but if so then it hid all traces of it being a game mod, and the download must have included the original game as it was an all in one package, and I'm sure I'd remember if there'd been any sign at all that it was Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, etc with a mod attached.

It wasn't on-rails (instead you could walk where you chose, as in most FPSs), I'm 99% sure it was in no way open world, it was set in modern day (i.e. there was nothing to suggest it was the past or future), and I think you started the game in your room in a college campus. It was definitely a single player game, it might have had a multiplayer, I don't remember, but the game where you start in a room (your room in college?) was definitely single player.

So basically, it was a standard (not too great, from what I remember) first person shooter, where you start in a room (I think inside a college dorm, as I think when you leave the first room you go down a hallway full of other student's bedrooms), 3D NPC models (not sprites, so it wasn't made on the Doom/Duke Nukem 3D engines), and that's about all I can remember. I don't know if the download was a full release, or a prototype or what. One more thing, I don't remember an intro before the game started, no FMV (or ingame engine animation) of a storyline, but I could have just forgotten that. And it was almost certainly on the PC, or maybe on the original XBox.

I'm sure it was released (well, made available for download) before the big influx of zombie games started, and it can't have been a good game, or I'd have played it more and would properly remember it.

Maybe, but I don't remember that HUD item thing on the bottom left hand side of the screen. And since it has the ultra-generic title 'Zombies' it's difficult to googe for. Do you have a download link, please, so I can try the XBox version and see if it is the one?

I am still 90% sure it was a PC game (and Windows, not DOS), but I'd like to download the XBox version of this game, to check, please.

Don't have it. I just read the description you posted and looked out for info of a game like that on unseen64.

Unseen64 is a great place for info on unreleased/canceled/beta versions of games. You should take a look.

I have done, thanks for the link, it's very interesting (especially the N64 stuff, I think, as it's my favourite console!).

BTW, I've started checking through my backup discs, if I can find the game, I'll post the name. And if no one else has it, but wants it, then I'll post it up for download, though if I manged to get it, then no doubt the hardcore unreleased/prototype collectors on here already have it (which surprises me that no one has responded to this thread with the answer, unless I'm somehow remembering the game wrong and so have messed up the description).

I think I know what you're talking about. Watch this Let's play of Day of the Zombie.

So summarize it's a mod of Fiddler's Green. They basically use almost the same resources as that game.

Was lurking at this website for quite some time. Decided to register because I'm almost sure this is what you're looking for....

Just registered just to try to help... Been lurking at this forum for a long time..... :)

Is it by any chance "Day of the Zombie" ? It kinda sounds like the one you're describing, Youtube has some Lets Plays on it.

I was thinking the same thing, also according to Unseen64 from a Mobygames trivia this game was meant to be the original version of Land of the Dead, then Groove Games showed to Universal Studious and got the license to make a game from the movie.

That's the one! Thanks so much for that! If anyone wants to try it, it's an old game, so it won't be demanding, PC-wise.

If anyone wants to download it, get if from here (for some reason, on both links, when I clicked Download, I have to click Try Again, but then they downloaded). The files are virus free (though of course you should always check everything you download anyway). I've not uploaded these files, I found them via Google (and thanks to StriderVM for providing the game's name) so I don't have to search through the rest of my discs to find the file.
