London Firefighters Tackle Blaze at Ex-Fire Station (Update1)

    By Thomas Penny
Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Firefighters tackled a blaze in a disused fire station at the Barbican complex in the City of London financial district.
Emergency services were called to the fire at the building, known as Milton Court, at 11:08 a.m. local time, London Fire Service spokesman Martin Simpson said in a phone interview. Some 30 firefighters and six fire engines went to the scene, he said.
The building was being demolished to make way for an extension to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, located in the Barbicon, City of London spokeswoman Lesley Mair said in a telephone interview. Planning permission for the project was granted before Christmas, she said.
There were no injuries and all the workers on the site were ``safe and accounted for,'' Nick Taylor, operations manager for Cantillon, the demolition company carrying out the work, said in a telephone interview. He said he didn't know the cause of the fire and that there would be a full investigation.
The 11-story structure which caught fire was a tower used for training firefighters before it was decommissioned. The Fire Service said the blaze was out by 12:34 p.m. and that the building had been ``50 percent damaged.''
The Barbican, which includes housing and entertainment venues, wasn't evacuated.
Heron International is developing a 35-story building on the site that will include 284 apartments and a six-story extension to the Guildhall School. It will incorporate a 625-seat concert hall and a 225-seat theater for the school along with rehearsal space and classrooms.
Local residents and architects had campaigned to save Milton Court, which was designed by architects Chamberlain, Powell and Bon and built in the early 1960s.
