Theres been a lot of talk lately about SEGA, their games and how dull the industry feels since they left the hardware business.

But the question is: if SEGA came back with a console and serious games to boot, how would you feel?

Honestly is not impossible, their software side of business is not doing great lately, and after the Wii success (proving you dont need a console with humongous R&D costs and the latest tech to make fun games) all it takes is some good management and some talent coming back to the company. Just look at apple: in 97 it was done for, but today is THE IT company, even bigger than google.

But then, would you trust them again?

    Where's the option for:
"Only if the people who actually made the good Sega games came back."?

If Yuji Naka, Yukio Futatsugi, Mizuguchi, the Camelot folks, and various others all came back, then yeah, I'd support the hell out of that console.

If its the shit Sega we have now, fuck no, I'd stay as far away from that system as I do Sony's crap.

Now now I think SOME of sony's first party stuff is approaching sega like uniqness like LBP Cept for the fact none of them have the soul a good sega game has.

I think we'll never see another sega console again unless they reissue the dreamcast and Saturn and other systems as some kind of nostolga deal.

I think Majesco reissued some old sega consoles right?

Sega had the right idea with there games on the Dreamcast and back then they were willing to take risks with games unlike now its just the same old. Theres been a lot of news that Jet Set Radio is making a return but on the Wii I wouldn't be interested in it to be honest :/

As long as it involves good games, good hardware, and no motion controlling bullshit, I'd be interested. But it isn't going to happen given the high cost of launching a console.

It is. My opinion is that Sega's actually in a pretty good spot. Stuff like the Olympics license and the UK studio productions put them on the road towards profitability. Not everything that they produce is going to be pointed at us hardcore gamers. I do miss the old quirky, risky Sega, but I'd rather have a profitable boring Sega than no Sega at all.

Sega can never truly return because these days its best shot at producing something innovative means the end result comes out for Wii, and compared to past glories that's not exactly worth hoping it will come back for (well, not without the likes of Naka, Mizuguchi and Suzuki on board, at least)! On the other hand, I could argue that as a corporate name Sega hasn't really gone anywhere in the first place, though deep down the better of us know this isn't even close to being true - where's the creativity last seen in its Dreamcast era work, for starters? We can dream...

Yeah, Genesis 3 and Game Gear Core along with a bunch of games. I thought it was pretty cool since the prices rocked. They were going to do Saturn I think but didn't.

    Here
That depends on what you consider "motion controlling bullshit". Sure, lots of Wii games do that, but others like galaxy and prime3 set the example.

Hardware wise, if they can make it HD and with at least 2/3s of the X360's power I think it may have a chance. At this point the components for such a console shouldn't be that expensive, and SEGA could offset some of the cost by selling it for a profit (albeit small) instead of subsidizing it.

Of course that a SEGA-Wii would have to be geared towards the casual, but then I'll rather have that and a few AAA games that our current situation, where we get the shit and barely any good games to compensate.

On your last point, I beg to differ...

Well this is an hypothetical situation where SEGA has their own hardware again. Plus the problem with the Wii is one of context: everybody wants wiisports and the like, so releasing AAA games on it seems to be a waste of time for most.

About the talent, only Mizuguchi has a good excuse to stay out of SEGA. Naka isnt doing shit with Prope, and Suzuki is off the radar.

I bet both would come back if they had the chance to do whatever they wanted on the console.

    Even Mizuguchi would be interested

I think the smarter choice for SEGA to go with (that would have a better chance of turning a profit) is to try their hand at breaking into the handheld market again.

It's no big secret that Nintendo's pretty much always dominated that scene. Still, there is a little more room for a new handheld system, as opposed to console market. I could see SEGA at least being able to break into the 2nd place slot (while stealing away a good chunk of the PSP's market share) if they could work a little of the SEGA magic of old.

Right off the bat they could make some quick sales by offering some classic SEGA compilations, along with remakes of their more popular big name titles; maybe even offer a "virtual console" type of online service to download games from.

I agree. A handheld using improved but backawards compatible Dreamcast architecture could be a success. They would have a huge number of launch titles. If they could release it with all of the original DC games available plus a line up of new titles to disguise the fact that it's the ghost of a dead system they could be on to a winner.

They could even go as far as hiding their identity, a little like they did with the dreamcast by making their branding as small as possible on the system.

The production costs would be a lot lower than the PSP as R&D just wouldn't be necassary. The excess cash could be used for marketting and supporting third party developers.

Now and again, Sega throw out a game that show us that the old Sega isn't completely dead... Virtua Fighter 5 and Outrun 2006: Coast2Coast being examples.

But the kind of games that Sega of old would release (the kind of games we'd want from a new Sega format) are simply not sellers, and would just serve to seal Sega's fate. If they wanted to stay afloat producing hardware, they'd have to produce games that would actually sell, and challenge the big three in the mainstream. I fear we'd see more licenced drivel, rather than Shenmue III or whatever.

    I voted "I don't care"

I trust official interviews that say hardware is out of the question. There's no legitimacy in your scenario, it's just your own wishful thinking I m afraid

no question that if they ever return their hardware will be way ahead of its time as it always was.

imagine shenmue 3 on hardware stronger than that of the ps3/360. awesome.

i stand behind sega till the end.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider the good recent games from Sega? Yakuza was my favorite, but I'm developing a fondness for Chromehounds now. Virtua Fighter 5 consumed me for months, and I'm still playing Phantasy Star Universe almost every day. I would also have more to say about the Total War series except I haven't played it enough to form a meaningful judgment.

From the viewpoint of my budget, there's plenty of Sega goodness to be had. If there was still a Sega console on the market, I'd probably spend a third of my income on games for it like I did with the Dreamcast. This is bad economy to be a fanboy in. :)
