I'd probably try going out for once just to check which season it is.

Life would be just like it was before 1990. There is a good point, no more social media crap and gaming would once again be a hobby you could talk about with people who know what they are talking about unlike today where everyone hinks they know it all because they bought a Wii or PlayStation.

governments and corperations would get away with a lot more, a lot more easily, instant global communication wou;d be a lot harder and easier to intercept block or censor.

    bad times.
although this would probably be a good thing for the porn mag industry

Certainly, it would probably be a good things as some of the old protocols that have better replacements would get tanked.

It's really not all the unrealistic. All it would take is for us to loose a major IXP and a good portion of internet users are SOL. Loose a few IXP's and we would really be hurting. Loosing an IXP isn't necessarily easy though.

The emerging surveillance state would take a hit which is very good. On the other hand, more direct techniques would enjoy less global recognition. At the same time, people tend to react harder towards direct actions (the old boiling the frog metaphor) so I would still chalk up a net benefit. I'd never have to see a stupid ass "meme" again. The death of social media would be, in my opinion, AMAZING. Perhaps it would help fix the state of perpetual middle school that social interaction has devolved into. Regional trends, slang, etc. could possibly come back instead of everybody having the same fuckin thing everywhere. Musicians, small software publishers who don't agree with in game transactions/invasive advertising, etc., would have a chance to actually make some decent money without being at the very top of the heap. Local retail outlets would no longer get shit on by tax cheating online retail monopolies. Irresponsible day trading would at least slow way down due to the lack of mass instantaneous trading.

Some of the bad would be, lack of access to great educational resources in an easily searchable format. I'd probably miss this one the most. No more ubiquitous free porn. Interaction with people in foreign countries would become more difficult and expensive. Instant paying of my bills would cease to be, allowing me to dust off my checkbook. That one would definitely suck. No more online tax filing on tax day would be quite difficult as well.

Idk which I would prefer now. I am 27, so I do have a very good memory of growing up in a pre-internet society, and I gotta say, aside from the lack of informational resources regarding my personal interests and certain financial conveniences I much preferred it. Due to this, I'm a bit on the fence. This is coming from someone who is currently slacking off at his job as a web developer.

Millions of men (and like 5 women tops) would commit seppuku after being unable to watch brazilian fart pr0n on porntube

Immediately the stock prices for kleenex and every company making hand lotion would collapse leaving millions without jobs

On the upside there would be 95% less jizz on every surface on earth

More control and oppression of the masses is what instantly comes to mind. The Internet is too good at allowing people to communicate instantly about a whole variety of topics that are at the forefront of people waking up and realising how flawed our societies are. If any sort of revolution happens the Internet is going to be one of the primary reasons for it ever taking place and one of the main tools that leads to its success. On the Internet there is nowhere to hide and very few secrets are left uncovered, over all, and it sounds contradictory to say it, it's generating a smarter and more observant generation of people who every day are becoming less susceptible to propaganda and more capable of standing up for their human rights. Not half of what we're capable of doing now to raise our voice would be possible if the Internet was to be abolished, people would go to great lengths to find other sources of mass communication but would still probably find it difficult to organise things like marches and demonstrations on the same scale, for both good and bad reasons. I think the Internet greatly benefits the people in so many aspects of life despite all the bad that comes with it and if it was to be taken away, we'd probably all be in a much worse off place.

You guys are too focused on the bad aspects of the internet like if it were just facebook and a random meme site. We have lots of knowledge and tools to help us available in a click of a distance, just because most of the people only connect to the internet to share the same old tired meme at a "social network" it doesn't mean internet is useless. It has brought us many great things. Even ASSEMbler, in a smaller proportion :)

"A communications disruption could mean only one thing: invasion."

The internet going down would likely be the result or the cause of a world war. The question is "what would it be like if it were shut down" not, if it didn't exist, or if it were to somehow not exist without causing problems, or what would you do if you didn't have the internet.
