How dare you stop making hardware almost 13 years ago and stop supporting it 12 years ago, if it's not going to last way past its lifetime, Sega?!

Uhh, electronics die. An electrolytic capacitor is often rated at 2,000 hours under certain conditions. Many factors will shorten the lifespan, including just plain old age.

To be fair on Sega, they may well have had a PSU manufacturer design the PSUs, anyway. And come back in 13 years and tell me your current television is still working! It'll probably have been the PSU that died! ;)

in all fairness what you say is correct. but a well built product lasts a long time
for example your in UK so you may remember this BEJAM

I have a chest freezer made by BEJAM that still works today and that also runs on power and a circuit board, its never been repaired, infact its so old I would even bother repairing it if it broke.

now for whom don't know about BEJAM and how old they are (were)

1989 was the last time BEJAM traded

Those old fridges are beasts. I doubt electronics are as long lived as them.
I have a 60 years old Philco Fridge, This is the very same model as this picture.

I doubt its ever been repaired, like seriously... Ever. I fixed the handle and that's it.
It runs like a charm. Virtually silent and all the food is extremely cold. If I put the thermostat any lower in it it becomes a freezer. Not joking, its better than any fridge I could hope to find today in term of temperature and low noise.

Whilst it's true that old things were often built to last, a freezer is hardly the same as a games console. There are basic electronics and that's it. In fact, the components would be incredibly basic if it was more from the Sixties end than the Eighties end. Certainly worth running from a reliability point of view, but probably not if you're interested in energy efficiency.

If you were to compare it to a television, it would be a different story. We had a 1972 television that lasted into the Nineties, then was replaced and went under the stairs only to be dragged out when the other TV went for repair. It blew up sometime around 2005. You might say it's great that it lasted a good 25 years as our main television, but the truth is that it had been to the repair shop several times.

Never had issues with game gears in terms of power.

Crap screen/quiet to no audio certainly. I had a box of four with the same problem at one point, fairly easy fix for that too
