What Is The Best Size/Brand Of CRT TV For Classic Gaming? That's the question Jimmy! From Odyssey all the way to Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox light gun games. *Best TV to support all the classic systems together. Thanks!
25" non-flatscreen CRT with SCART (or modded RGB input). To support all systems, you will need to make an RGB bank switcher as well as have all systems running with RGB out (unless you just use SCART ).
Sounds good! Thanks! I actually have a 28 inch non-flat screen CRT TV by General Electric! Will have to add RGB/SCART though, how do you suggest I go about that? Thanks again!
i've had 2 Hitachi's and 1 JVC, i like the Hitachi's seem to be solid enough. currently have a widescreen 28inch, got it specifically for lightgun games and classic consoles. also has no problem displaying 60hz which is a bonus as its pal uk comes standard with 2 RGB supported scart inputs, also RCA in and headphone out. best of all it didnt cost me anything, it was free previous Hitachi tv was 28inch non widescreen, had pretty good speakers on it and plenty of inputs S-video RCA and scart. loved that TV was great for gaming, but it was old and eventually died
I have a trinitron CRT too and its great. Only problem I have with it is its flat and the madcatz Xbox lightgun i bought does not work properly on it
I like the Sony portables, but the larger sets can be somewhat of a mixed bag. The Panasonic sets were consistently good, even the 80's ones were very reliable (as were Mitsubishi). Philips were OK up until the latter half of the nineties where some of them started having CRT issues, although I think that only affected the larger screen 29" and Widescreen models (here in Europe anyway). Also found this interesting blog. Basically some Australian chap going around looking for TV's with RGB SCART sockets. Not sure if it's anyone off this very forum, who knows.
This is a great piece of advise. If you're in the UK just go to your local council tip and take your pick from the many that will no doubt be there.
I have an early 2000's 24" Samsung. Has Composite OUTPUT (great for capturing game footage), composite, component, and S-Video. Unfortunatly I don't do RGB/SCART. It has GREAT picture quality. I LOVE it. Has a slight hum though. I also used to have a 32" JVC with 2 component, 1 S-Vid, 2 composite video inputs. Loved that thing. Both are both alive and kicking as main tvs.
I'm using a flatscreen 27" Toshiba with component, s-video, etc and have only good things to say about it. Great picture quality and sound. Plus, it's still small enough for the average person to move on their own. I was using a 27" Zenith hd-crt which does not work with the systems lightguns mentioned in the op. The picture quality was great but it's power supply was located too close to the speaker (or something) resulting in a constant low hum when turned on. Because of the humming I wasn't too sad when it died.
Sony Wega Trinitron. They made models up to 40" on the US. Here in Brazil the biggest was 38 inches, it weights 102kg, a beast but AWESOME picture quality. It also has component input.
I have like a 27" or such Panasonic. Composite and component. It even takes Famicom RF. Except no s-video. Again I've frankly never heard of a CRT doing that.
well my 22" Sony Trinitron does s-video plus scart with RGB. I am in PAL region. Though it lacks component, which i don't care much because i use my HDTV for consoles with component output.
An SDTV with component input is a pretty good fit for what you're looking for. Flat-screen Trinitrons can do a great job of upscaling the overall picture. I've tested a wide variety of systems from NES to PS3 on a Trinitron KV-32FS100 and I've found that even composite video looks pretty impressive on it. It is 180 lbs. so it's kind of dangerous to move it around, but it works with the NES Zapper! Make sure that you look for a conventional SDTV that only displays up to 480i, though. As other members said, certain TVs don't work with lightgun games. Typically, any set that does 1080i or even 480p won't respond to lightguns properly.
Personally I'd say any CRT TV would do within reason. I use a small 14/15inch Toshiba CRT and it looks and sounds fantastic with all my older consoles I have a larger 20-22inch CRT same brand but I prefer to use the smaller one right now. I guess I'm kinda keeping the bigger one saved up for when this sucker eventually decides to bite the bullet..
awesome advice, theres loads of people looking to get rid of them to save space, and will be happy for someone to pick them up n drive away with them, check out freecycle for your local area too people always putting tv's and tv stands on there think freecycle covers uk and usa not sure about other countries. worth a look though. also i just put a status up on facebook that i was looking for one and friends responded which made things easier
I grew up with a 21" non flat, non widescreen, non poncy brand TV for my bedroom. It wasn't too big to take up all of the space and it wasn't too small as it was good enough for 4 player split screen too. It looked kinda like a Ferguson M5515UT but we had a different brand badge on the front.
