I always thought black comedy was more along the lines of Reginald D. Hunter, making jokes about his own race. We in the UK have 'dark humour' almost solely run by Frankie Boyle, and makes jokes about dark topics such as strange sexual acts and erm.... more racial comedy xD
When I saw the thread title I was hoping to see an explanation involving black people and I was not disappointed lol. But yes, black humor is considered to deal with taboos (mainly death) which people normally feel uncomfortable about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3PJF0YE-x4 My favorite black comedian . Generally I think black/dark humor is trying too hard. Frankie Boyle is good with it, but theirs people (not including the EDGY kids) who just go out and spin it out one after another.
Thanks for replies, when i was looking on wikipedia it seemed more about playing with death, and the closest one would be off color humor. Here in Brazil is commom jokes about death, diseases such cancer and racial ones. Because I was planning a black comedy game and i was unsure if I should say it was an off color humor or black comedy.
a black comedy is where they make fun of issues that are usually no laughing matter, not everyone appreciates it but those that do tend to love it
In Danish, we have two different ways of calling black comedy for black comedy. One is "Black Humour", the other one is "gallows humour". But then again. Languages are pretty cool. So whether we say this or that . Then we know what it is about
Or you know... maybe... just maybe... he has a new routine? The material tends to change with each tour and there has been a fuckload since 1996 lol. Chris Rock's "black comedy" lines from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back circa 2001. As the late George Carlin will tell you, there are no bad words, only bad context.
"I think a lot of people were thinking in those terms and hadn't been able to say it. By the way, I've never done that joke again, ever, and I probably never will," says Rock. "'Cause some people that were racist thought they had license to say n-----. So, I'm done with that routine."
Yeah done with that routine and on to another one. He is still racist in other ways, just more subtle "black comedy" since he found mainstream fame from doing that kiddie crap like Madagascar and girly crap like 2 Days in New York.
That doesn't change the fact that that routine is nowadays almost exclusively referred to by people who also say stuff like "Why is there no White Entertainment Television? " and "Rappers say it all the time, I should be allowed to say it too! "

Yes, but more than just the taboo subjects. It's a cynical humour, really. Film-wise, you're talking about the likes of Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, M*A*S*H, the 'Burbs, The Cottage andDeath at a Funeral. Comic-wise, I'd say the one that stands out for me is Jimmy Carr. He actually says the best joke is one where people laugh, then go "ooh, I shouldn't really be laughing at this!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzb_p1mRW1M
