I have a stand up After Burner II. What is the difference between After Burner I? Music (I love the music from After Burner), graphics or, missions?

After Burner II is just a revision of After Burner. Both were released on the same year.

    Copied from Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_Burner_II

The differences between After Burner and After Burner II are very small, and it is easy to confuse the two. The differences included:

    * The waiting-for-start sequence (the screen/music after a player inserts credits but before starting the game) is different.
    * After Burner II added a throttle to the controls, allowing players to vary their speed while flying.
    * After Burner has 18 stages; After Burner II has those same stages but adds three additional stages that make 21 stages total.
    * After Burner II added a few minor enemy changes to introduce new speed-based challenges (missiles/aircraft behind the player aircraft) to account for the use of the new throttle control.
    * The player's missiles in After Burner II could be fired considerably more frequently.
    * Musical compositions were the same for both games, though After Burner's instrumentation is different in spots.

It makes you wonder why they even bothered to release Afterburner 1 in the first place. Sounds like a rush release while Afterburner II was what the game was originally ment to be.

Another one is Galaxy Force II. From what I remember that's basically a slight upgrade of the original Galaxy Force.

Thanks for the heads up on the two. But I would have to agree that why they even released I. II is the only game I've played I guess, never saw a I, because every one I've played had the throttle control.

I just love this game, I have it for the Master System, Geny, SEGA-CD, 32x. I would have the dreamcast version, but I told it was baicly the Geny version. I think the 32x version is the closest to the real deal. It even has test screen that matched my stand up test screen, except for no lights and motor testing.

The Dreamcast version is the Arcade version not the Mega Drive versions. You should get Yu Suzuki Game Works. that includes arcade ports of Out Run, After Burner II, Power Drift, Space Harrier and Hang On. Actually Hang on is the same one used in Shenmue. It's easy to tell as well since it has the words "`Doubita" on the billboards. The other games are probably from Shenmue as well apart from Power Drift. That was never in Shenmue but I have a feeling it was going to be in Shenmue III.

For the information about After Burner II. I'll have to look for that title, was there a US title? Maybe that's the one I was going to buy, but my friend told me it isn't the arcade version. I have Shenmue but I haven't played much of it. When I got it, all my consoles where put in storage until I get a bigger place. Well I have a bigger space so I have most of my consoles out. :)

Better get all the Sega Ages, since Out Run got messed up badly with not showing any testarossa like vehicle anymore (due to license reasons).

Isn't the Saturn port of After Burner II supposed to be pretty accurate as well?

I'm sure it was mentioned in a magazine preview of Sega Ages (the US/EU compilation, not the Japanese standalone range) that only Space Harrier and Out Run were arcade perfect on the Saturn, with After Burner II having a few lower resolution sprites and minor scaling elements missing. Didn't the Japanese-only Galaxy Force II also lack a few rotation effects as well? On the subject of Power Drift for the Dreamcast, hasn't it already been concluded that Yu Suzuki more than likely planned to feature this game in Shenmue III?

So who can answer this one: Which After Burner game (I AC, II AC, ...?) has the melodic version of the music? The Saturn Sega Ages version has at least 3 versions of the music (plain, FM-sounding AB1 music and more elaborate AB2 music, and then a "with melody" version that is far superior to them both.) But whenever I play After Burner II in MAME, the music is the regular non-melody version.

I like the saturn japanese ver of after burner II, has an option for a remixed sound track.
as did most of these if not all(been a while not 100% sure) ,sega ages release, space harrier, outrun, after burner II, galaxy force II, powerdrift,

shocked thunder blade got no love...:(

when playing after burner on the 32x for a bit i found some hidden msgs.
If you hold the some buttons when getting resupplied you get a msg.
i just mush all the buttons not sure if its just xyz or a mix but i get the msg most of the time. there is a new one at each point of getting resupplied.
1st msg is carrier take off " your mission rescue lucy from match's hands"
2nd msg is fuel play "match is approaching equip enough missile!"

one of the last ones is the password "T.K" I entered that at the high score it flashes
    "I love Kiyomi"

any know the story to this? I have known of the msges for many years now not sure if anyone know more.

I dont know if it works on other ver ill have to try i have it for all systems nes on up.
