No. Mine runs around 40°C idling and around 55°C when gaming. Try cleaning the thermal paste between the heatsink and CPU then applying some new good quality stuff. Many seem to swear by Arctic Silver so it must be good stuff. I don't know since I haven't done that to mine.

It might just be dusty. If the fan is all gunked up that would definitely cause a heat issue. But if it's clean sonic's solution is a good one. :)

What version xbox do you have, 1.0 has a problem where the gpu fan fails and the temps skyrocket (both GPU+CPU) , and 1.6 units dont normally give accurate temperatures, if using older software that hasent been updated (evox), and even that is a bit dodgy at reading the cpu temp properly from a 1.6.

If you dont know what version motherboard you have, can you please post the MFG Date, its not allways a 100% accurate but most of the time we can guess what revision board you will have.

40°C - 55°C is a normal range, but this does have to do with the thermal paste Bad mentioned. Removing the GPU heatsink isn't easy though...

I heard that the Arctic Silver 5 is a good paste but has a lifespan of around 5-8 months. After that you should replace it if you don't want the temperature to rise up again.

For my part I have some no name paste that really does the trick. I used to buy good (and expensive) paste until I bought this huge nameless tube. I can honestly say that I don't put any other stuff than this thing. The performance are really good.

EDIT: My 1.2 runs at about 38/38 idle(CPU/GPU) to 43/41 when watching a x264 video in XBMC. I did change the paste and installed a 80mm fan.

I've never seen an xbox run anything lower than 64 degrees celsius. I'm just assuming then, that all like 13 xbox's I've modded have bad thermal paste?

8 months? it should last 8 years! Arctic silver 5 is really good paste.

takes a few months (or a few hundred hours use) to get its maximum thermal bond and be at its most effective though
imo you really get what you pay for with thermal paste and bulk cheap paste is terrible!

might work ok for an original xbox though but wouldn't use it on a decent Cpu or a 360 or PS3 and it would have a short life span (maybe 1 or 2 years)..

i'll stick with my arctic silver or Arctic MX-2 anyday which is what im using atm.

Im liking this MX-2. doesn't seem to need any bed in time either and its good for noobs because its non conductive so they wont have any potential "accidental" shorts

the crap from the factory was crap when it was first applied letalone now its 10+ years old.

the 1.6 i just did recently for Sh*ts and giggles (havent played around with an xbox for years) i used Arctic MX-2 and it's (according to unleashx) running at about 40c idle and 45c when a games been running for about half an hour.and the fan set at about 2x in the unleash settings. its not hot atm though so that might go up to about 50c on a hot day i guess.

haven't tested a movie through xbmc, with the fan turned down yet though

but so far so good (been about a week) i found this thread because i thought it was still running a little hot but apparently not lol dunno how accurate unleashx is (shrug)

its not that hard! you just need a heat gun and use it on the low setting, heat up the heat syncs until you can wiggle the heat syncs loosely (careful theyll be hot) and when they slide freely you just kinda wiggle them off & be careful not to melt the plastic surrounds or heat it up so much you wet the solder on the board and then heat it up again to wipe of the cpu/gpu dye's, i use those little alcohol wipes you get from the chemist..

but if you dont do that first then yeah its a nightmare, you can pull the top of the cpu or gpu off with the heat sync (ive been there)...
the crap they put on there at the factory is like glue
