Sorry for my ignorance, I lurk these forums a bunch but don't post much at this came up on my ebay suggestions... found it weird.. curious if it's anything important of if I'm just stupid. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Playst...erence-Tool-/281007625314?_trksid=p5197.m1992 Thanks!
It's an early model of PS3 dev kit, before they were made to look externally similar to retail consoles. This particular auction was mentioned in another thread, not sure which, but it was said to be overpriced and missing some cruicial pieces, an antenna and foot pedal I think.
To my eyes these function-over-form designs are so much better than the real consoles. Is there any use of this for playing games? Would it be able to launch a retail game?
Totally overpriced, considering how old these units are. I wouldn't even pay that amount for a used one in original packaging and all accessories included. But each to their own... (and I already got one with nearly everything, in original packaging, at a much more reasonable price tag :triumphant Reftools pop up from time to time, but are still somewhat rare. At least in comparison to PS2 TOOLs, which I'm mainly after. Probably because of still being in use :love-struck:. To keep this on-topic: no, not really. Unlike machines in retail enclosures, the DECR-1000A does not have an internal antenna. So no external one => no wireless controllers and stuff, you'll always need to connect it via USB cable. And the foot pedal is used to send an event to the running program, for example to trigger some internal data collecting during development. Agreed. And unlike retails, they are stackable. Not that I would suggest to actually do that, but at least its reassuring that you could do it. Cannot say for all these machines, but at least mine plays every retail game I have (disk content only; I never tried, and never will, PSN, DLCs, game updates and so on). That is, if its at sufficient firmware level. Retail and DECH (debugging station) firmware updates do not work on a reftool, you need the updates delivered as part of the SDK. Like retails, it even offers to install the firmware from BD-ROM if you have inserted a game requiring a newer version... only to fail after reboot, stating that the target file is not supported :stupid:. But at least it does not do any damage, the unit continues to run on the old firmware afterward.
Speaking of DECH (debugging systems) how much are they worth now (Phat model)? Could it be lower due to YLOD which could happen in the near future? =Z
