Probably ps1 & ps2 for rpgs, theres a awful lot of really good rpgs on those 2 systems.

For me my most all time favourite rpgs are on gamecube, theres nothing out there like homeland & giftpia.

Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. My favorite RPGs are there, though I don't know if that means much since I'm not real big on RPGs. Or perhaps that means alot since I don't really care for RPGs but SNES has such great ones that even I will play them.

Games that come to mind are Final Fantasy 4, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2), Terranigma. And there are plenty more.

Just about every system has excellent RPG titles now. What's nice is that through the last three generations of consoles, a lot of games have been ported back and forth between them. That way you don't have to be a perfectionist nut like I am and own every console to play them all. In particular, the best Dreamcast RPGs showed up on Gamecube and some of the top-tier PC games ended up on Xbox.

Mott and Taku covered some of the mainstream stuff, which is cool. I've been interested in a lot of exclusive games that weren't repeated on other consoles. The N-gage has a ton of strategy RPGs that you won't find anywhere else, including the Pathway to Glory and Rifts games. The Neo Geo Pocket has the excellent tactical game Faselei and the well-presented Biomotor Unitron. It's also worth checking out exclusives on the Saturn and the Sega CD, which gave us some of the best of the Shining series and some of the definitive Working Designs games like Lunar and Vay.

But truthfully, the Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo DS are where it's at for RPGs right now. Many of the early Final Fantasy series have been ported over, and there's a significant number of original games as well. I particularly enjoy the Shining Soul action games, and I hear the GBA version of Tactics Ogre is well done. I'm right now deep into Final Fantasy 2 on the Advance.

The PS2 (and by extension through backwards-compatibility, the PS1) offers a MASSIF selection of RPGs, so definitely check that out. The PS1 by itself and SNES are also great standalone solutions if the PS2 is out of your reach for whatever reason.

if you mind struggling yourself through jap. language RPGs, the PC Engine would be some kind of heaven for you.

Yeah I was really interested in both of these games. I'd import them. But seeing as they are RPGs, I probably would be screwed for understanding them.

There's no english language option is there?

I would have to say PS1/PS2.

They certainly have the greatest variety of RPG's available. The PS2 in particular had a ton of games released in the last two years of it's life (assuming it "died" at PS3 launch) that were either RPG's, Action RPG's, or Strat RPG's.

    2D RPGs - Snes / SFC
    3D RPGs - Ps1 mixed with a bit of ps2 (I recomend a ps2 and just playing ps1 games via BC).

SNES games are harder and more expensive to come by, but PSX RPGs are still relatively a bargain, but more and more of them are getting harder to get a hold of unless you pay a pretty penny.

PS2 RPGs are even a better bargain. Ico and Shadow of Colossus I'd also recommend you pick up. They are not RPGs but great adventure games for the PS2.
