What machines have good software that you can only play via backup devices?

Since one of the great things about Everdrive and other such devices is that you can play non-commercial games and other software/homebrew, I was wondering what machines had a good range of such software, be it game hacks/language translations, homebrew games/utilities/emulators, never released games, game prototypes, etc?

The N64 doesn't have much in that way, sadly, and some of it's best (the Super Mario 64 hacked levels) won't even work on a real N64 due to the Mario 64 hack code being w and tested only on emulators and relying on something (memory page limits, or whatever) that the real N64 can't support, so trying to run these hacked levels on a real N64 causes them to crash, sadly.

On the plus side, there are some great hacks for Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, and some new levels for F-Zero X. And also there are game trainers (cheats), though I don't know if these are available as hack files (I'd be surprised if they weren't) as so far I've only seen the pre-hacked (trained) roms, as part of the GoodN64 set. And there are at least three translated-to-English patches, for Animal Forest, Wonder Project J2: Josette of the Corlo Forest, and Sin and Punishment (though sadly S&P's translation is emulator only, as it's a straight bitmap graphic translation, rather than pure text. Maybe the other two translations are the same, I haven't checked those).

And apparently The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest, which was a pre-order bonus release with the Gamecube only release of Zelda: Ocarina of time, has been dumped to a rom file and works with the Everdrive 64 and emulators. For more information see http://zeldawiki.org/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time_Master_Quest

There are also some betas (prototypes) and never-released games available, as far I can tell/been told, the known games available on line at the moment are:

    Tommy Thunder,
    O.D.T.,
    Frogger 2,
    Dragon Sword,
    40 Winks,
    Robotech,
    Sydney Games,
    Glover 2,
    Toon Panic,
    Mini Racers,
    Wildwaters (Extreme Kayak)

Links: (I don't know this sites policy about linking to (ex) commercial roms, so I'll only post legal links, i.e. to sites that don't contain illegal rom downloads)

I know that the SNES has a fair few game hacks for classics like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and (I think?) Zelda: A Link to the Past (though doesn't Super Mario World refuse to work on a real SNES, in an amazingly similar situation to SM64 on the N64?), and also some fan translations of Japanese only games, but I've not tried any so I can't confirm this. Probably the Megadrive is the same, and I think I remember hearing that both the Atari Jaguar and the Atari Lynx had homebrew games written for them, and I've heard that the Atari 2600 has an active homebrew scene too.

I have 3 Sonic 3 prototype ROMs for the Sega Genesis I found on Sonic Retro. The first one is the complete game of Sonic 3 and S&K games as one ROM. It has a few differences from the released games but they are small and hard to notice aside from the hidden monitors in the hidden palace zone.
