The megadrive is still very much alive and popular in russia and bootleg games are sold pretty much everywhere, including new HK/pirate originals. The console itself is usually a clone too. The only question I have is what official games will it play? Somebody gave me a russian MD2 but when I tried to fit a PAL NHL96 cart I literally had to bang it in for it to fit, and it still didn't play the game. Yes it was a vulgar way to go but I didn't care for the pirate console or the game (ew) at all.
Yeah but they tend to follow a single standard in Russia. The only clue I have is that PAL carts do not fit/play on the russian consoles.
Sorry, dude, but it's as far from reality as we are from Andromeda galaxy. In Russia like everywhere else there's like a ton of different clones. Older style multi-chip clones (best compatibility), single chip (same chip as Tectoy or it's clones) or usual rebadged ATGames ARM-based crap (worst compatibility and sound). So, what superg said is absolutely right. A few years ago a friend of mine brought me a really cheap-looking clone. To my surprise it was more or less perfect clone with region switches and stuff - excellent sound and picture, fully compatible with everything i had including Sega CD (US), MegaCD (JAP), 32x, about 100 carts (also tested a bit more games from a flash cart), so it ended as a replacement board for dead Genesis. It was a MD1 clone and no, it wasn't Scorpion XVI/Bitman thing - those are good but have sound quality worse than original. So the point is - with clones you'll never guess what's inside unless you're going to open it, but most clones made in 2000s tend to be worse in terms of quality and compatibility.
