Well after class, I come home and my phone decided not to work on me. I go to my friends house to use his phone, dialed the 800 number I called before, their circuits are busy so I'm stuck. I'm gonna have to go to the bank my account is located and tell them what has happened. After that I'm going to notify the police.

They way I think they used it was by using it as a credit card. Thing is I have a check card which can be used either as a credit card or debit card. Using it as a credit card, they don't need a pin number and you can use the card to order pizza over the phone and give them the card number (not PIN), Dominoes as well as other pizza places, should ask for signature when they deliver the pizza but they usually don't. As for the video rental, it was used at a non franchise video store (not BlockBuster or Hollywood Video), it was a local video store and they prolly did the same here where they used it as a CC.

After I get it taken care of at the bank I'm going to the police and file a report, etc. Have them subpeona Dominoes and the rental store to give up info pertaining to those transactions and if it was an insiders job I'm gonna sue.

    Get them, Madhatter.

Get them good. These bastards think they can steal from us only because they're the bank. And they arbitrarily abuse their customers, but think they're invincible.

I really hope you can morally violate them.

If I can be of any help (no idea how, though, I'm not a lawyer), ask me for anything.

:smt043 you're joking, right? Using it online is the WORST place - you don't know who has your info!!

Person 1 could be the hacker who's got into your computer and installed a key logger.

Person 2 could be anyone at the store where you entered this. They usually keep your number on file, so ANYONE could access it.

Also, a lot of these secure processing things aren't exactly an immediate transaction. They verify your card ready to take the money, then bill the card when the items are ready to ship. In the meantime, your card details are kept on file. Again, anyone could misuse that info. Some stores online might even have a "secure" system but instead of having an online account, they'll enter your details on their terminal, much like they would over the phone. I've seen this happen - you'd know because you'd probably get an ordinary card machine receipt that says customer not present. Well, if little Timmy can enter your number into the machine, he can jot it down on his hand, too.

You wanna know the safest thing to do with a credit card?

    That's bad.

I had a problem with my credit card, but it's now solved. They checked and discovered someone cloned my credit card. Anyway, they said to forget those bills, and that they'll send me a new credit card with a different number.

It's hard living now-a-days w/o a credit card. Need one to sign up for so much crap online, it's kind of ridiculous.

I wouldn't agree with suing them though, madhatter. There's enough of that crap already going on--don't need any more. :smt009

I've heard several reports revealing that your credit card number's just as likely to be stolen in any normal shop, or even more likely, than it is online.

There's been stories over here how some shops have two of those credit card machine dealies - they'll swipe your card in one, then say it's not working and swipe it in the other. They're both working - one's for actual transactions, the other's just for scammin'!

    Yup.

You are correct. Down here, there are special machines built for the purpose of cloning that use a similar system.

People that go to "fancy" restaurants or those "clubs" where they get selected like cattle by the doorman are always getting their cards cloned. Not that regular people don't become victims often too, but it started in those venues.

Also, very exclusive expensive stores have had that cloning problem with the people that work there. Hasn't been on the news in Mexico for long. though... Maybe the banks paid the TV stations to stop saying their security measures and customer service suck ass,

Heck, I remember some sod selling an alleged VISA copying device (looked pretty real) on ebay.nl for 20 euros years ago :smt043

And Legit, cutting your card in half wont help for online scamming as they still have your number ;-)

  9. Yeah, I was gonna say, 128-bit encryption (the standard for sending CC numbers and related info online) isn't something a bored individual cracks in a spare afternoon.

In person, you have another human being handling your card, viewing your signature, cameras to get your image... and THEN it gets transferred via internet anyways to be verified. It's an overly paranoid idea, I know, but give me online sales over person-to-person any day.

Now the way you go about scamming a CC is you don't steal one at all - had me this awesome program on my Palm that could generate valid CC numbers for a variety of cards, as well as inform you if an entered number was a valid card number or not. :smt043

The only thing that's ever happened to me was that I got refunds from places I've never been. I went to my bank to look into some other stuff and they noticed that on my bank statement. I had the equivalent of a buffet meal from a Shoney's in a whole different state refunded on my account and some other random shit.

Wachovia didnt know what the hell happened. They guessed that someone entered the wrong numbers when they refunded the money at the person's bank or something.
