My Sony MD player (don't know what model, I'll look it up later) is busted. The disc rattles when I put it in, and then refuses to load. I've tried multiple discs. I'm looking for an MP3 player, but I'm more concerned with what to do with my MD player. Any suggestions (fixing, selling, etc.)?
since you could get a new one (pretty high spec) for £39.99 these days, it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one than get it repaired
I actually didn't have any intentions of fixing it unless I could do it myself. I hate paying for repairs on anything. I'd get another one if they sold non-Sony MD players around here.
You could always try www.minidisco.com or www.planetminidisc.com if you're in the market for a new player. Sony was about the only company who wanted to risk minidiscs over here (I think AIWA put out a few models), so the ones you'd find here in the states are largely Sony models; if you want something else you'll most likely have to import. And since your player is busted, have you tried opening it up and looking around? The disc rattling sounds like it could be something with the drive spindle, or possibly the little metal enclosure that holds the disc in place. Heck, if you're really desperate I've got an old player I could let go of - it's not MDLP, and is a bit bulky at about 6" by 3", but it works great.
If you want to try and fix it yourself then you should start with this page. Find out which model is yours and search the site for repair guides and such.
got alot of problems with Sony music related things, my Walkman always ''search on the cd'' in before and after the middle of a tune, at each 10 second aprox. and this can take up to 8 sec of delay before it continues where it left off. any suggestions? and no, i won't paid for repairs, it's repairing it myself or throwing it in the basket. (because i doubt it will be fine after just a repair, just like my old playstations 2 with DREs( i paid for two repairs, and the third time it broke, i decided to hang it on my door, just after the mario bros 3 board. Class.) never had any luck with sony things to say the truth... oh, it name is ''CD WALKMAN D-EJ361'' with ''G-Protection'' by the by
Take the cover off it and hook it up to your PC via the USB cable. Stick a UMD in it and load up a screenshot of the game on your PC in your favorite image viewer (make sure the screenshot matches the UMD in the drive!). Now, take a picture of it all and post it to the Official PlayStation Forums claiming that you've got a PSP Emulator up and running! Oh, the reaction should be amusing. -hl718
Hah, funny thing. It turns out I left it in my car, which is in the shop right now. I should be getting it back today, with any luck. I think I'll pop it open once I get it back. I'll check out some of the repair sites everyone mentioned. cahaz: My Walkman has been dropped numerous times, and it's the only Sony hardware (other than my stereo) that still works for me. I've had it for two years, and it's showing no signs of going out. That thing is a trooper .
I get the same thing - everyone is caught up in the "OMG!! SONY=MADE OF CRAP!!" bandwagon, but the portable devices I've had from them are some of the longest lasting ones I've ever had. I had a early Discman (back before skip protection was standard) that survived about four years of being dropped and kicked around on school bus trips, and my current Minidisc player has been with me for nearly 5 years with not a problem (aside from the abysmal SonicStage/OpenMG Jukebox software), and the MD player I had before that still works great when I'm in need of some analog recording.
The only non video game Sony electronics I've ever had is... uh... an alarm clock. It's over ten years old and still works. Anecdotal evidence rules doesn't it?
I only judge hardware by my own experiences. My MD player has broken after less than a year, and I treated that thing like a baby. My stereo and CD player act like they did the day I bought them, though. My first PS2 started dying (the disc drive motor and the notorious DRE), but my TEST is still going pretty strong. It seems to be hit or miss for me. Oh, and I got my car back yesterday. I took all of the screws out of the player, but I can't seem to get the front faceplate off. I'm going to do a bit more research on it. Edit: Grammar stuff.
