I've only recently started paying attention to Raspberry Pi for tons of reasons, including amateur robotics.

I like how some people have used it for gaming, but, sadly, the Pi 2 isn't powerful enough to handle this beast:

So, what kind of capabilities should we expect from a Pi 3? When would such a thing be expected to release?

We will probably see another modest CPU and RAM upgrade with tweaks to the board like with RPi2. If history repeats itself, we will see a RPi2+ first.

At this rate the Pi 4 will be a Dreamcast

Keep in mind that emulation is not all the same. UltraHLE achieved playable results on far less "powerful" hardware than its competition at the time NEMU64. And then there was another emulator called Corn I believe which again impressed people by it's performance. Yes the easiest way to get better emulation performance is to improve the machine running the emulator, but emulation can be made a lot slower or faster depending on exactly how the emulator works.

As far as the Raspberry Pi, the R Pi 2 is quite a nice improvement for an emulation box. Yes the available N64 emulators probably aren't great. However it seems that systems that might have struggled before like SNES games with Co-processors (Super FX, SA-1) and PS1 are now performing at full speed and playable results. I'm sure as technology progresses the R Pi 3 will be another marked improvement but I agree with BLUamnEsiac, it won't be a huge leap.

GoH, The R Pi 2 is a better emulation machine than the DreamCast certainly. The DreamCast struggles to emulate SNES games at full speed with its SNES9X port where as the R Pi 2 with its runs full speed and I believe better sound quality and supports chip enhanced games.

Unless I'm mistaken, GoH might have meant it would take a RPi4 to emulate Dreamcast. I think it might take a generation beyond that if RPi upgrades remain modest.

He will just have to clarify. I took it as to mean equal to a DreamCast as a platform to run emulators on. Perhaps that was incorrect.

I would just like to point out that on SNES9X-Next for pi2, it can even overclock superfx games and still run full speed (I tested it on my Rpi2B+, overclocked) . Starfox was running so fast, that I had to turn the overclock down to be able to play it lol.
