Hiya, i'm new here, but I'm excited to report that I just bought my second Sega Saturn, since the Saturn I bought last week was in bad condition and I paid a lot of money for it. I found a much better one and couldn't be happier. Yay! I just gotta snag me one of those Action Replay cartridges so I can have the extra RAM and i'm set I wonder if there's any reason I should keep the 2nd Saturn? Anyway, I just started buying some games for my Saturn(s) so I don't really have much of a informed opinion but I like the Saturn because of its history. I was always a Nintendo person, so Sega stuff was always foreign and odd to me. It didn't have some magical charm or flare or something back then... but now that i'm older, I realize that I was just a kid and now I can objectively come to my own rational conclusion: Sega controllers feel great in the hand and the games were quite out there. I'm not too much of a fighting game fan, but I'm getting in to them slowly! Shmups are more my thing and once I have enough dosh, I'll pick up Metal Slug! I can't afford a Neo Geo AES so that will have to suffice for awhile hehe
I'm considering advertising my Action Replay. Rather have a memory card who directly saves, I'd like to play Dragon Force and its kind of save backup hogs.
play asia stock them for a decent price last time i checked, but uni bios and an official mem cart are better imo. ontopic i was playing alien trilogy on the satun yesterday and it played alot better than its psx version imo.
I would get them and some games from Play-Asia.com but they screwed me over back in 2008 when the DualShock 3 controllers first came out in Japan. I have a 60GB PS3 with the original non-rumbling Sixaxis controllers. So of course when the DS3 controllers came out, I immediately placed an import order from Play-Asia.com. When I received the controller, and an international copy of Drake's Fortune, I tested out the rumble with the game and was loving it. However, after a few days, the controller would get "stuck" like when you power on certain game systems and you press on the analog stick in a direction, it fails to register the x and y axis at 0, but instead it will get stuck registering whatever you put in as the x,y axis for 0. So the same thing happened to the PS3 controller, except it was a hardware issue. Long story short, I submitted an RMA/return/replacement order from Play-Asia and asked for a replacement. Shipped it to Hong Kong or where ever they're located for $10+ USD shipping (at my cost to get a replacement). Once they got my broken DS3, they emailed me saying they tested it and found nothing wrong, and sent back the broken controller to me, despite the fact I had been nice about the debacle, they didn't help me. I was FURIOUS. I vowed to never buy anything from them or support them, after I stupidly placed an order for Initial D: Arcade Stage for PS3 since they actually had the cheapest price :s, but still, the fact of the matter is they screwed me over and i'm not going to buy anything from them again. Especially hardware. I thoroughly dislike them. Edit: I should mention that during the time I was waiting for my broken DS3 controller to arrive in Hong Kong and get processed for return, I ordered Initial D: Arcade Stage since all my friends were playing it at the Arcades and I wanted to get better, so I ordered from them as a token of a faithful customer, but it took them 3 months to come to the conclusion that it wasn't broken. Just for giggles, I paired it with my PS3 and tried another game. Same issue. I hate Play-Asia. I was such an idiot to have trusted them. Edit 2: I may have to swallow my pride and order from them, if only they had the S-Video cable! Gosh, I can't find those ANYWHERE. I wonder if I can make my own?
Definately when it comes to fighting games, just works like a perfect couple. That was the factor for myself to buy a Saturn, just the great range of fighters that were avaliable along with exclusives such as Nights into Dreams. The Saturn ran 2D fighters so well and I spent hours playing Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter along with Street Fighter Alpha 2, but I spent the most time on the 3D fighter that was Fighters Megamix... apart from Tekken 2 it's one of my favourite 3D fighters to come out of the 5th Generation.
Because Sega Saturn was short lived but back then Sega Saturn console itself was ahead of time (same for Dreamcast) featuring time clock, Video CD card and built in Cartridge slot for Saved data, Exploder cheats and extra ram. those features were new and big thing for console back in those days. I do find audio better than PS1 Audio though. Mind you, It is pretty impressive that games like Shemue Beta, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil (fully 3D games ) capable running on Sega Saturn due that it was originally specifically built for playing 2D games. I thought Controller was decent aswell and library games is good too. That just my own opinion. For those who planning getting Sega Saturn, I highly recommending getting Action Replay Cartridge 4 in 1
Amazing (for time) 2D power house Near perfect arcade ports Best controller Most titles available for reasonable prices My 5 Favourite games- Street Fighter Zero 3, Out Run, Afterburner 2, Chase HQ & Nights (for gameplay and nostalgia)
What was good about the Sega Saturn? Daytona USA (graphically inferior, but much more enjoyable to play than DC version) Panzer Dragoon Nights
I bought my Saturn last year and gaming hasn't been the same since. It's like my game console equivalent of my best friend.
for me, i'm way late to the Saturn but it's an amazing core machine for stuff that's niche now: arcade - Sega Ages (as well as Memorial for older titles i never played!), Capcom Generations, Konami Antiques, Falcom Classics, etc fighters - megamix, x-men vs SF, last bronx, fighting vipers, Waku 7 etc SHMUPs - radiant silvergun, dodonpachi, battle garegga, souky, salamander deluxe pack oh god so many greats it's got working designs RPGs and stuff like Elevator Action Returns. it didn't help at all but the best dev teams were like oh, you want another sonic? BAM here's a new IP. it's exactly the kind've thing people bitch on the internet that modern systems are too scared to do, honestly.
