Late 2017 word got out that Sega was, in partnership with Retro-Bit, going to release new accessories for their classic consoles. Has anything materialized out of this? We got to see prototypes and boxes at CES, but I have yet to see any other news concerning this.
Is there no interest in this? A pity, because retro Nintendo consoles have all gotten new, modern controllers that have fixed whatever negative parts plagued the older controllers, lack of wireless, poor controller sticks etc. But there has been little love for Sega consoles.
You would still need the receiver for those DIY kits. Krikzz of Everdrive fame has released his own wireless 6 button Genesis controller that has 3 modes for 3 button, 6 button, and even SMS games. There was a guy selling an expensive kit that converts DC controllers to BT. I'm not sure if they are still doing that. Personally, I currently have no real need for a wireless controller. I have a 14 inch PVM so I am sitting near it in my little office setup. Even the short and stubby Famicom controller cables are fine, though another 6 inches would be great. When it comes to SEGA consoles, I only ever play my SMS and I have a NES controller I modded for it. Length on that is about 5.5 feet so for sitting about 3.5 to 4ft away from the PVM, the cable length is fine. Now a wireless Atari 7800 controller... That would be a day one purchase for me!
I have the exact same setup, with a 14" PVM, and I have no desire for wireless. Hopefully it won't add much lag, but you're still gonna have to recharge the batteries quite often. But controllers wear out, especially controllers with an analogue stick. I'd hoped more consoles would have gotten the Brawler 64 treatment, where the N64 controller got a new analogue stick akin to the Gamecube, but new official controllers of great quality will do.
I would love proper modern replacement controllers that don't suck. I still like the idea of wireless solutions and I am considering some like 8Bitdo. Thinking of getting the SNES one since I could use it on both the SNES/SFC and my Famicom via an adapter. Hoping these officially licensed SEGA controllers come to market and are of good quality. We need more good controllers for older systems. Probably shouldn't hold my breath on the 7800 and just make an arcade stick for it already...
