yeah topic title says it all.. im going crazy over this shit, ive had my 1chip for about 2 months now but still havent found a decent nor working controller. is there one with all the necessary buttons mapped? preferably somesort of joypad.
It's very easy to modify a 3 button Megadrive joypad to work on the MSX. You will need a small philips / crosshead screwdriver, a pair of wirecutters, soldering iron + solder and a small amount of wire. Read everything first to make sure you do everything correctly. When I say connect wires to the pins either use the minimum amount of heat to solder the wire to the pin or look for other points on the same track to solder to. You can damage the chip by using a soldering iron too long on the pins. Tinning wire is a good thing as is keeping wire lengths short. Open the pad up and look at the board. Find the wire that is connected to Ground, you can't miss it, as it's connected to one side of all the buttons and directions. Get this wire and snip it as we won't use it. Find the wire that is connected to Pin 12 of the chip and desolder this and connect to the point where you desolder / snipped the ground wire. There will be a wire going to Pin 1 of the chip on the board. Unsolder this and wire this to Pin 12 on the chip. Connect a wire between Pin 16 and Pin 1 on the chip. Check your connections. Close the pad up. And now you have a joypad that works on the MSX. Use buttons B and C as buttons 1 and 2. If you want button A to work as button 2 too then solder a wire between pins 11 and 13.
Necro-bump for a good thread that helped me out just yesterday. Worked like a charm. Let me add the word Genesis to the thread to make it easier for 'muricans to find in the future.
I've built a smaller adapter using these schematics for my 6 button MD/Gen controller, added also an RS232 extension for plenty of slack easy to put together.
