I know its been discussed before, but what are the best famiclones out there? Also post pics and technical info if you have it. Also can people still get the pocketnes or game admiral? I used to see them all the time on ebay, but nothing in the last year.
There are probably more Famiclones out there then there are Famicom games to play on them. They boil down into 6 catergories 1 - Straight copies, copies of the original Famicom with minor changes and/or different case copies. 2 - Generic console, consoles that don't look like a Famicom but play Famicom games. 3 - Lookalikes, clones that look like bad copies of other consoles whether it be a Nintendo 64, Playstation, Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Megadrive, Super Famicom, Gameboy, etc, etc 4 - Portables, clones in a tiny case with a screen and use batteries, most of them have awful displays, eat batteries and have a build quality that even Lada would reject. Most of them can be used with a TV too. 5 - Edutainment machines, cloines that are built into a keyboard and comes with edutainment software, and normally includes useless things like a chinese word processer, a FC version of bootleg Windows, FC version of bootleg MS-DOS (yes seriously). Machines normally have a mouse too and the worst keyboard that if it was 5p in a clearance sales in PC World you would think it was overpriced. 6 - DVD players with built in game player. See below. I have a couple mainly a straight FC clone, a Game Theory Admiral (nice enough machine but the most awful adaptor to play FC games) a Playstation 2 lookalike and a Edutainment machine. With Famiclones nowdays it's best just to pick up what you can, as being in Hong Kong, one of the homes of Famiclones I have struggled to pick up even one. :crying:
Orbit PTDVD 7685: (pic courtesy of Hawanja) AFAIK the best famiclone, ever. A portable DVD player with 2 USB joypads and a CD with 300 games. Also it has TV output and it's made of metal, not plastic! Works with DVD, Audio CD, VCD 1.0/2.0 & MP3.
Well, the best clone I have (I have three famiclones by the way) is my newly gotten PC KID 3, where my pictures will come up sooner or later, when the time is right. Oh by the way, since I live in pal country, would a pirate famiclone cart work in my machine, if it was bought in an NTSC country ?
for me its the elusive famiclone that had a megadrive slot and a famicom slot - and was incorporated into a six button joystick - some years ago one was at a local shop - with box and everything - but it didn't work and for some reason the shop owner would not sell it, making excuses every time. never saw one again. shame, as I'd love to have one simply for the novelty factor.
http://my.qxl.dk/accdb/viewItem.asp...geNr=1&Catg=10314&ArticleType=0&LanguageNr=12 looks nice. we'll probably see it locally soon enough.
I'm partial to Chinese PC type fami-clones since I like the fact that you get a mouse, keyboard, printer adapter, software, or whatever else they try to add to make it look like a real PC I bet nowdays, some of the higher end ones might even work as a regular PC/PS2 keyboard.
I was going to buy the Neo Fami clone but I read it has trouble playing games that have special chips in like Akumajou Densetsu and Crisis Force. Does anybody know if that's true, or could recommend one that plays them ok?
A real Famicom? Like the Famicom plus with the SNES/N64 AV connector built in, that way you'll be able to play anything. Failing that a Famicom, they are cheap and you can make it AV in a basic way with 2/3 Phono leads and a 75Ohm resistor or a small circuit board with an amplifier. I have the Neo Fami and it plays all the 100 or so Famicom games I got fine (except for Track and Field as it lacks the 15 pin socket to plug the controller in and the 3D glasses).
The Familator (Yes!) came out this (last?) year over here and looks pretty neat. If I were to get a Famiclone I'd get this one.
