It should be compatible with video games from Famicom to Dreamcast, so we're talking S-VHS, component, RCA, and I'd like to switch between 'em. I've seen a few models with remote, but I don't need that.

I'd like it to also display 720p, but it shouldn't be too expensive. Or should it, to have a perfect picture?

    Eh?

Firstly, we need to clear up formats.

S-VHS is a video cassette format, better than VHS but not professional.

S-Video, on the other hand, is a mini-DIN connector used to transfer video signals.

RCA is a connector, whereas the video format that uses phono (or RCA) connectors is composite.

Outputting composite video in 720p via VGA? Err, that's not going to happen! Again, VGA is 640x480 so obviously that's not possible ;-) There are other formats e.g. SVGA, XGA etc. which are higher. Still, upscaling composite to 720p won't look all that great, if you even manage to do TRUE 720p.

What you want is an upscan converter, or upscaler:

Neo Geo fans will know that the xRGB has been the best upscan converter for a long time...

I think most people understood I wasn't talking about VGA as the resolution itself.

So are there any tips on VGA boxes that's available on the market and not sold out?

I only need to play video games at their native resolution and/or a higher one. (Isn't the DC capable of higher resolution? Or is that only the official VGA box?)

The DC runs natively at 640x480 via VGA.

As will most consoles, at least the older ones. You can upscale, but it won't be great.

xRGB is still available if you look hard enough, and you can always find them on places like neo-geo.com or ntsc-uk forums, or other arcade forums. You want an RGB output if at all possible, though.

And yes, a lot of consoles can output VGA natively (with a box / lead)

360 (also does many xbox games)
PS3 (also does PS2 / PSX if you have the right model)
    Dreamcast
    Wii (also does GameCube)

You'll find that HDMI / Component is usually better, if supported.

PS3 and Wii need hacked cables to work with VGA.

HDMI->DVi should work for the PS3.

Also, the Ps2 VGA cable should be operational with monitors that support Sync on green.

Yes and yes, used both... albeit with varying degrees of success depending on monitor.

Older and / or cheaper, i.e. the kind that are some Asian brand you've never heard of with the DVI socket missing to save a few bucks.
