yesh - also note how the grips are mote pointy compared to the retailed controller. Also, the D-pad "circle" (where it's embeded) is like the SNES controller instead of being parabolic.
Some Arcade games state that they are running on "Ultra 64" hardware at the start. Some even sport the Ultra64-Logo. Cruisin USA is the most prominent I can think of right now, I once played a dual cab on a ferry to sweden that stated during the attract mode that it ran on "Ultra 64"-hardware. What was interesting was the fact that the game seemed to run from CD, or atleast the music. When we hit some rough waves the music would stop and if the shaking continued the game would reset and run through some kind of startup sequence, fist checking some Roms and Ram and then loading the game into memory (according to the screen) which took a while. I always thought all U64-based arcade games were cartridge based ones?
not sure for Cruisn, but i think the most similarities between n64 (retail) and arcade, can be found in MACE: The Dark Age PS: the stick on the proto is quite slippery after an hour of gaming due to sweating.
Cruisin' USA actually runs on Midway V Unit Hardware: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=615&gid=1141#1141 No CD's, just lots of eeproms to load. Killer Instinct, also has HDD for Graphics: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=614&gid=1139#1139 In the end, the arcades, have nothing from the Project Reality / Ultra 64 Mace runs on the Seattle Hardware, from Atari: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=782&gid=549#549
heh, cruisin really tricked me, although I used to be a regular visitor to System16. This was one of the logos in the game: http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/1/18/250px-Ultra64.jpg
Ah the Ultra 64 logo on various different hardware a million miles from what the N64 ended up like. The only arcade hardware that used Nintendo 64 hardware was the Seta Aleck64 which was use mainly by Seta, Aruze and Visco plus one game from Capcom... had a couple of games that would have never been released on the N64....
i have an article about project reality from dicember 93. it's an interview with James H. Clark at the time founder and president of silicon graphics inc. made by an italian magazine in Milano. anyone interested?
