What's the most modded console ever? I suppose this could go into two categories, one where the mods are for gaming reasons (region free mods, mods that bypass copy protection, mods to add a sound chip (I'm sure I read somewhere that some console had a sound chip in the JAP consoles, but not the NTSC consoles, even though JAP games would run on NTSC consoles), a mod to make the joypads wireless, etc), and the other category for asthetics (such as painitng the shell, adding coloured LEDs, etc).

So what is the most modded console you've seen/worked on/owned, in either category?

Personally, I've never done much to mod a console (I'm not a visual person, so I'm not bothered how a console looks (though some of the (visually) modded consoles I've seen on the web look fantastic), and I don't import games or try things like overclocking a console), so the most I've done is the extremely pedestrian having my original XBox fitted with a mod chip (yep, I didn't even do it myself!) and then I fitted a larger hard drive, then formatted it and installed Evo-X, so I could play the games from hard drive. And a few years back the XBox's DVD drive packed in, so I replaced it with a new one.

I have also soft-modded my PS2, and added a hard drive (and network card) to play games more quickly and conveniently, and I've soldered a reset switch on to my N64 (so I don't have to get up and go to my N64 whenever I want to reset it) but I've done nothing to my Gamecube, XBox 360 or PS3 (I've always meant to look into 'fixing' the potential for the 360 suffering from a RROD problem, as apparently you can prevent it by adding new (better?) heat conducting gel, or adding a heat sink or something, but I've never gotten around to it).

The reason I mention it is that there's an RGB mod in the works for the N64, which I'll probably be buying (I have a PAL N64, which can't be RGB modded normally) so I've been looking at other mods and it's a really interesting subject, but for the technical and game altering mods, and also for the aesthetic mods that can really make a console look fantastic. Consoles that have been made into handhelds (which I'd imagine is a 'transformation' rather than a 'mod', as you're creating a new thing altogether) are also amazing, and if I had the ability then I'd love to do something like that, but there's no chance, sadly.

I would say the original Xbox is one of the if not the most modded console ever. Almost everyone has softmod on it

In terms of aesthetics the 360 has had a lot of mods ( laptops, paint, window, etc) the consoles I had are:

    1 softmodded painted original xboc
    2 painted 360 with lt3.0
    3another painted 360 with lt3.0
    4 ps3 slim with cfw
5 another ps3 which I downgraded and put on rogero
    6 rgh 360 slim
6 normal super slim ps3 I'm using for Netflix and psplus
7 my ultimate cooling mod ps3
    8 ps2 with a dead laser ( was chipped )
    9 ps2 with modchip
10 GameCube which is getting a xeno GC and a region mod and I cut the case to play normal dvdrs
11 ps1 which is getting chipped
12 probably about 3 psps all with cfw

I would also go with the original xbox, I still keep two that are modded. Both hard modded with Team Xecuter mod chips and 500gb hard drives. These things do everything from play games to media centers!

My second choice would be the PS2, everyone around here modded them because Japan got some games faster than the US. Especially the fighting games and Shmups!

I would say that the PS1 that I'm am working at at the moment is probably going to be the most modded PS1 that anyone has ever done before. :D

I'd say the original xbox, in terms of the range of mods and software hacks people were doing, xbox-scene was amazing!!

Definitely the original Xbox then the PS1. The Xbox, of course, was well-known for getting pwned and used for XBMC and games on a bigger hard drive using softmods or TSOP flashing. It was pretty easy to do, so there were a lot of gamers who knew someone that could mod Xboxes.

The PS1 had so many modded systems out there it's ridiculous. You could pile up all the American and European PS1s, throw a dart at the pile, and have a decent pile at hitting a modded PS1.

    Original PS1 hands down.

While the Xbox was common for people online and enthusiasts - I never once came across anyone with a modded Xbox in the "real world". By comparison, i didnt know anyone without a modded PS1. When I buy job lots of PS1's pretty much all of them are already modded (often with 4 wire old crow chips). I have had 1 modded xbox come in like this.

This. I was the only person I knew who had a modded Xbox, whereas growing up in Italy pretty much everyone I knew had their PS1 modded at some point or another.

I don't go in for aesthetic mods, as I much prefer a stock look, but in terms of sheer number of mods performed on one console I did try doing every possible mod on a Saturn before the bugger broke on me. Now trying the same with a SNES Mini.

Guess it depends which country you live in.

In the USA I've only known 1 person with a modded PS1 but I've know lots with modded Xbox's.

The only people I know with modded consoles are those modded by me.

I'm sure the PS1 is the most modded console followed by the PS2 with the XBox being a distant third. Saturn probably comes right after it unless you count CFW in which case the PSP or PS3 might win out.

This surely wins for "the most modded console unit" ever!

Tough the most "modded console model" probably is the xbox/ps1, as everybody had a modchip for those!

What was there to boast about? Basically he had the 2nd most massively produced console ever! Lol! :D
But yeah, I remember people trading burned CDs, as internet speeds were quite slow back then, so finding ISOs to burn was a bit complicated...

I agree though, in sheer numbers, the PS1 was the most modded console ever followed by the PS2. Any one of those you pick up from a flee-market, chances are there will be a mod chip lurking inside. :)
But as far as diversity goes, the original Xbox 1 had the most wide range and exotic moddings ever!
Back in the day, people would even install Linux / Unix web servers on them and use them at their companies for commercial use, instead of buying those huge, noisy & expensive HP servers.
And the reason is simple, it was a PC basically.
