Was this to be used as some kind of phone pad controller? *Edit: Turns out NTT is a Japanese telecom company, so that makes sense why it has a phone-like keypad.
I believe there is a similar one for the Famicom. I think it was used in horse-racing betting, among other things...
That little expansion connector on both systems got a WHOLE lot more use in Japan than it did in the US and Europe. -hl718
That top picture was taken by me  It's part of the Super Famicom modem set for the JARacing service. Yakumo
Yakumo, do you have more information about the modem and that service? I've not heard of it before. Thanks.
At the old Assembler museum: http://assembler.roarvgm.com/famicom_network_system/famicom_network_system.html

That EBay pic looks like it takes Hu Cards, very odd. I wonder what cards went in there. Some type of smartcard type authentication card?
I took pictures of the pad (Shown at the top of this thread) Modem and cartridge that had the betting software on it. There wasn't anything too interesting about it all to be honest. The modem had the SFC logo and the old NTT logo. Apart from that it looked like an old external modem. These are now pretty rare. As for value? Well, I sold the set that the pad above belongs to on EBay a few years back for about 50 USD. I wasn't to bothered since it only cost me about 10 USD  Yakumo
