OK, thought I'd start a poll. As you can only have 10 options, I decided on the "classic" era. As great as they were, I excluded the early Ataris, Colecovision etc. and there are some others missing too. Sorry for that! I thought this was probably the best way to balance them, though. Please vote for the console you think had the most decent SHMUPS, not just because of one game! If you genuinely feel another console deserves to be voted for, feel free to say. And in the case of multiple systems listed, feel free to state which you're voting for!
I love the PC engine Dragon Spirit, Galaga, Dead moon, Coryoon, Blazin Lazers, Aeroblasters, Air Zone, the best of the best in my book Runner up Dreamcast with Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2, the Gigawings and I'm just starting to appreciate the Saturn.
I still have a lot of exploring to do, but so far I've come to love SS and MD the most when it comes to shooting. Saturn (Garegga, Dodonpachi, Layer Section, Darius Gaiden, Metal Black, Cotton 2 and many more). Mega Drive (Gaiares, Elemental Master, Thunder Force-series, Gleylancer, Verytex, Battle Mania-series, Eliminate Down and many more).
I have to admit, I'm not a big SHMUP fan, but the game that got me more into the genre was Arrow Flash on MD. Any more hardcore SHMUP fan wanna tell me whether its cool or crapola?
Sega Saturn all the way. you'd be crazy to think otherwise. Well...... maybe the PC Engine would be a close runner up. Yakumo
Genesis cuz that has Truxton (so does PCE but I dont own one), and Raiden Trad with better music compared to SNES>
It's a very hard choice between Saturn and PCE. Both systems have some amazing games, but I think I'll go for the Saturn.
i am a really big Shmup fan, and bangai-o and ikaruga decided this poll automatically for me...DREAMCAST forever...hell they are still making Shmups for that *dead* console underdog
PC Engine had them all. No other console attracted all the major shmup producers. Irem, Konami, Compile, Hudson as well as innumerable smaller players. No other console has so many of the absolute classics, not to mention good conversions.
