When do you think Sega was at it's most creative?

Seconded. When they were behind the hardware as well as software, SEGA did a lot of amazing things.

Ugh, that game was horrible. If we had to consider any Sonic game to list as a quick reference for the Saturn, I'd rather go with Sonic Jam. Sure it was a genny compilation, but it's that much better.

I meant a proper 3D Sonic platform game for the Saturn.

I remember we organised a SEGA event back in '02 and had Samba de Amigo blasting the After Burner tune through some huge speakers. Those were the days..

Nice tribute track. I don't really care for the Wii U at all, no.

and this bring us back to the topic at hand. When Nintendo was playing it safe with Family friendly games, Sega was pushing the envelop and understanding there was a mature audience that played games and they took risks. They instituted a Raitings system before the ESRB even existed.

I respect Miyamoto San, But The minds at Sonic Team and Yu Suzuki did just as much for gaming but don't get half Miyamoto's credit.

Sonic R was Sega's last FU to the Saturn, denying it a proper sonic game killed that console for good

And miyamoto's fame is 30% actual work and 70% PR by nintendo's marketing dept. which always had a better understanding with the press than Sega did.

For me it's hard to choose a console or a year. Looking back I would pick the "genesis until dreamcast" era, but like someone had posted, SEGA almost did everything by itself back on the SMS days. Impressive.

For me it was the Master system to Dreamcast era its pretty much where all their established franchises came from meanwhile i have ignored pretty much half their releases since the end of Dreamcastwhen they left it for dead i started to ignore them

Sega channel, to this day, remains the pinnacle of all things Sega for me. It was the perfect combination of never-before-seen innovation and bang for your buck value. And I say this not to downplay all of Sega's other creative ventures, but rather to elevate how mind blowing Sega Channel was for 1995. The technology behind it wasn't very innovative (it worked just like pay per view) but the implementation was amazing. It's STILL my all-time favorite DD service.

I think Sega was most creative/most daring with first party games and games picked up for first party distribution at the height of the Mega Drive-era - the point just before the CD and 32X showed that they were fallable. After that point, there was a lot of belt tightening and cut offs on the more daring projects whilst they played things a bit more safe.

Of course, there are obvious exceptions to the rule: (NiGHTS, Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sonic Adventure to name but a few) but I feel the confidence knock that Sega had with the failures of the Mega CD and the 32X, and the negativity surrounding their rash decision to release the Saturn before the games were ready, meant that there was a lot of problems which rattled everything to the core.

Obviously, things picked up a bit in the Dreamcast & post-hardware era, but I don't know whether they truly got the innocent do-no-wrong creativity streak back... it's quite difficult to say.
