Morning all, I've registered here to learn, and I figured you'll all be in a good position to help me out in getting started. I'm looking at getting into hardware and console modding as a long-term hobby, specifically the Dreamcast scene as a starting point, but I'm open to other consoles and projects. My working PC knowledge is second-to-none, I have programming skills but both of these are of limited use when it comes to modifying hardware and electronics. I've had some experience in re-flowing cracked solder points on circuit-board connectors, fixing small console issues, and powering things using USB ports, but my electrical knowledge extends no further than that and a physics A-Level. So, I'm asking where a great place to start is? Is there any recommended reading (articles or books)? Techniques? Equipment? I'm a sponge waiting to soak new information up! --- A little about myself: I'm a games technical artist for a games company, working in the UK. In a few weeks I'm moving to a new company as a UX Designer with the aim of being transferred to the software development team in a 6-month window, for a printing hardware firm. I have a BEng (Hons, First Class) degree and I've been making video games and popular game mods for the last 13 years, the last 3 of which, I've been doing it as a career. As a result, I know the lifecycle of products and development, and I'm coming here to learn before I decide to commit to something far beyond my skillset.
Ahhh committing to something beyond your skillset can be half the fun. At least that's where I find the fun to be. Learning as you go. I'm definitely a more hands on type of repairer myself. But like you my electrical knowledge is nothing spectacular! Someone on here will pipe up eventually with some golden knowledge, sorry it isn't me! Anyway, welcome to the boards and we hope you have a very enjoyable time! :encouragement:
Welcome :smile-new: I am new as well and I am sure you will enjoy the community here just based on the past month I've here
Like Assembler says the challenge is the most rewarding, since I join the most thing I do is read and learn from other. When I find a mod I like to try I just look for it there are a lot of people here that already do it. When I got stuck I just ask and the help is there with a lot of options and methods. I'm no programer and my electrical knowledge is completely bland that's why read a lot. If you like to take the challenge of modding this is your place for sure.
Dreamcast internal vga or sdcard are good first mods. My first was dreamcast overclock, kinda easy if you're not a kid though, and somewhat useless also... A challenging one is a dc piggybanked 2de bios. Welcome aboard!
