I'm planning to replace my Macbook Pro superdrive with additional SSD storage. A friend recommended me a Vertex 3, but it's not the cheapest and I've read some stories from customers whose SSD's died after a couple of weeks, and the replacements did as well. Which SSD would you recommend? 120GB is a bit too little I think. Something between 160-240 would match my needs.
OCZ Vertex 2 http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-vertex-series-sata-ii-2-5-ssd.html 120gb should be fine. i have a 60gb ocz drive in my desktop had it about 3-5 months great 10 second boot on windows. im currently thinking about buying a 120gb version for my laptop. if your laptop can handle a vertex 3 go for it but a vertex 2 is fine
See if you can still get your hands on the 25nm builds as the newer models on 35nm are known for issues and less performance.
How can I see the difference between 25 and 35nm? I have been looking around a bit but the opinions seem to be really different about Vertex & Agility SSD's. There are lots of people who claim that their SSD's were dead out of the box which scares me a bit. After a lot of search I found this model which doesn't seem so bad: http://www.amazon.com/OCZ-Technolog...7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309361148&sr=1-7 I think 120gb will be enough if I store everything but applications & OSX on the regular 500GB 5400rpm HDD.
Before purchasing an SSD, I suggest you read Jeff Attwood's experiences of SSDs. tl;dr version: SSDs fail. A lot. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/05/the-hot-crazy-solid-state-drive-scale.html
Well, I'm aware of all those horror stories about SSD :/ Then again, there are many people who never had problems and use them for 2 or more years (when the technology got popular & affordable). I will do regular time machine backups and no real "data" (like media, document) will be stored on it, it's only to enhance the system's performance.
TOUCH WOOD, i had nothing wrong with my ssd but atleast i only have my os on mine. thinking of getting one for my laptop but reading that gets me worried that id loose all my stuff on my laptop
