I'm putting together a new system and finally upgrading to an LCD(the old blurry ass CRT is killing my eyes). I'm stuck between 2 models. The BenQ 937-S. http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=monBEfp937sd_12ms And the Samsung 172x http://www.gamedude.com.au/prod_show.php?art_no=monSA172_X All the specs are pretty identical except the BenQ is 19' and the 172x is 17'. I'm leaning towards the 172x because my brother has one so I already know it's a kick ass monitor but it's hard to not pay an extra $4 for for an extra 2' of screen space. The only review I've been able to find of the BenQ is at Tom's hardware but i'd like to see some more(freaking google is ruined by spamming ad sites). Help please?
There's a review of the Samsung on Tom's Hardware too, but it's comparing it to a different BenQ: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20040413/index.html If that BenQ in that review uses a similar LCD panel than the one you're looking at, it may be the better choice for gaming as ghosting isn't as bad. Then again, whoever reviewed that really seemed to like Hydis panels, so maybe you should look for a monitor with one of those panels instead? Here's a review of a few others: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20041123/index.html What will you be using it for mostly? If it's gaming, personally I'd just get a new 19" CRT - Mitsubishi Diamondtrons (or Iiyama Vision Pros - they both use the same tubes) are kick-ass monitors, and they're cheaper than LCDs. People seem to forget that LCDs suck eggs when it comes to response times, ghosting, colour rendering, contrast and brightness... OK a lot of things. They do have their benefits, but the way technology is now IMHO they don't have enough benefits yet...
i have a benq 231w which works like a charm in games only problem i cant run them in the natural resolution of the lcd cause my pc is to slow to get counterstike source in 1920x1200 running =)
Out of those 2, I would go for the BenQ. BenQ always gets high marks, and that screen looks like another winner from them. Currently I run a Viewsonic VP912b on a Geforce 6800 GT OC and the games look amazing. There is no ghosting, and it is the clearest picture I have seen on any LCD monitor. The Viewsonic is cheaper then the above monitors, but I'm unsure if price will affect your decision. Is this store online or can you walk in and buy the LCDs? If it is retail, I would definitely go that route, in case you need to return the screen due to stuck/bad pixels. ^_^_^
There are some pretty neat, Flat CRT monitors that are much cheaper than LCDs, and in my opinion also look better. Sure, they take a metric fuckload of space, but they might be worth a look.
Hell I got a 21" CRT monitor on my desk and it doesn't take up that much room, it all depends how you lay out your desk. I would not touch a TFT, I have turned them down plenty of times (for free, and no I won;t get any for people and sell them cheap) simply because the quality is laughable compared to a cheap CRT, let alone a decent one.
but did you try at anytime to transport a 23" or even a 21" lcd to a friend or some lanparty ? even my 17" did hurt me in the back when i had to transport into a 5th level of his house on the stairs... and to the quality you might be right that crt for 1500euro would beat a 23" lcd in ways of color acuraccy but i must say it was a big step forward from my old 17"crt to a 23" lcd and i would go never back to a crt in the near future if they change not fundamentally
I have actually, I guess I'm lucky that it didn't hurt, it did twinge after lugging it from work to home, then up stairs then spend about an hour moving my office around then setting it up, but just moving the thing between places isn't a problem.
Thanks for the replys. I'm gonna get the BenQ. I won't be watching movies on it(PC is next to a TV in my room so I just use TV-out. Looks better) or doing any photo editing so all that maters is games and text. From reports it does text fine and games are amazing on it. Will let you know how it is when I get it.
