Guys, After a few months of PC Engine HuCard fun, I am seriously thinking of getting hold of a CD unit of some description, but which one to go for? I have a Core Grafx which is RGB modded, so the Super CD-Rom2 would be an option, but I am also interested in either the Duo, or Duo-R models as it would be nice to keep the Core as a backup for HuCards if needed in the future. What are the benefits of a Duo-R over a regular Duo? I have heard they are more reliable, but as they are 'cream' they are also more likely to yellow, not so good! Does the Duo-R play all CD's except Arcade titles (I already have an Arcade Card Duo on it's way to me!) There is a guy selling units he cleans, RGB converts, and fits a new lens on eBay. In a box these go for £105 before shipping, his feedback looks good, but anyone on here have any first hand experience of one of his machines? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEC-PC-Engine-DUO-R-RGB-Connectable-Model-2g-New-Lens_W0QQitemZ190365138768QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c52a57f50 Let me know if you can help with my questions. Cheers, Paul
Buyers on ebay seem to praise his work, only 2 out of 267 complaing but nothing real serious. The console looks to be in great condition and the seller legit, I would go for it even! if I had the cash that is Don't know much about NEC consoles so I am of no help there sadly.
all DUO models are technically the same, means they all play any CDs exept ACD, which requires at minimum an Arcade Card DUO (and altered beast, which strangely only runs properly on a CD-ROM2 with sys card 1.0). in additional the DUO looks better than its successors and has a separate and adjustable headphone output. but as you already have stated, they also have some common sound issues, which then some dehydrated capacitors (elko) have to be replaced to fix it.
