I posted this on the ISO Zone forums in my thread about the Chinese "Number" 99min CD-Rs, but it seems worth repeating here:

I was playing Shenmue 2 last night (900mb English version burned on Number brand 99min CD-Rs) on my Version 1 Dreamcast and I got a file read error when changing areas, and then when I restarted the system eventually it started reading it as a music CD, which was a bit scary. I opened it up and tweaked the pot for about an hour-- I was able to get the game to play again, but it would still crash during the loading screen fairly often. I also re-burned the disc just to narrow it down, and the results were the same. What's peculiar is that this Dreamcast never had problems before last night, so something about it must be slightly ajar since last time I played with it.

I think we might be able to chock this one up to the system's age, and the GD-Rom drive inside being lower quality. I decided to take out my trusty, yellowed Version 0 Dreamcast that I've had since I was 13, and I was able to get the game working again without any adjustment to the laser pot (I've never tweaked it on this system, either). I played the game for about an hour before I experienced a crash, but that was still a huge improvement over the Version 1 system. I might tweak the pot later but until I can reliably re-create the circumstances where a read error occurs, I'm not going to worry too much about it.

Looks like my childhood Dreamcast is once again going to be my primary dreamcast. The V1 is a lot whiter and still plays official GD-Roms and games burned on high quality 700mb CDs just fine, although you can kind of tell it's got a cheaper drive in it by how much noisier it is even after getting fresh lube. I guess I will be slapping some Retrobright on my old Dreamcast sometime soon.

The winner for reading CD-Rs, even if they are Chinese high capacity ones, seems to be the one with a 0 printed on the bottom label. I think overall those models are more rugged and mine has certainly stood the test of time.

Well if your going to buy another DC in the future...
    The PAL ones are great...
I have 6 PAL, 3 of them with different boards, revisions, and they read everything.

In the other hand... The two Jap ones i own are very picky ...
They don't like the food I throw at them haha
