A few friends of mine and I would like to visit Hong Kong this winter. We would stay for 7 to 10 days. Currently we aren't sure if we should stay on New Year's Eve or on Chinese New Year.

New Year's Eve offers a great firework, but Chinese New Year has the Lantern Festival. On the other hand there are a lot of public holidays on Chinese New Year. That might be a problem for tourists and I'd like to go shopping as well :)

Which date would you recommend? I'd be happy about a few opinions.

    Thanks

According to Wikipedia the Chinese New Year goes over 15 days. Which one would you recommend for a visit?

It really depends what you want to do and see. If you're there just for the party and have people to stay with, Chinese New Year could be good but you also might find a lot of things closed during new years.

On the flip side, Going during regular new years will let you see some festivities and still have access to shops.

So I guess it depends what you're going for, Shopping or festivities.

Personally, I'd just go on a regular joe-nobody date. Having to fight the stupidly huge amounts of people rushing to travel home and such is just madness.

We would like stay for a week. We go for sightseeing, shopping and it would be interesting to see a (Chinese) festival. Therefore I asked about the two dates.

btw, we are going like to visit Macau for one or two days as well.

Since you say it would be interesting and you don't know anybody in HK (assuming or you would mention it). I think your best bet is to go on New Years and not during Chinese New Years. Besides since it's your first time there, it would be best to go when it's less chaotic.
